Razor Beauty
A sunny, fall afternoon on the lakeside balcony of Venice, Italy, is the romantic setting of
a date shared between a young, and happy couple. At least that’s what is portrayed to the
population of exceptionally average women who flip through their copy of the month’s
Cosmopolitan magazine and stumble upon the “latest” Venus Embrace advertisement. Not just
any ordinary razor, the Venus Embrace stimulates the sensation for women to be desired by the
opposite sex by presenting a handsome American man, touching caressing a young and
attractive female caressingly. The scene created is designed is designed to relate to for the
younger population of women in or around their mid twenties and their desires. If one uses this
product, it will undoubtedly bring a significant other closer, or to help attract a good looking
man.
The overall picture depicted is significantly larger than the actual product. It emphasizes
heavily on the happy couple and their body language in the direct center, rather than the razor,
which is presented in only a small corner of the page. The print is in small, plain font located in
the upper left hand corner, which is nearly swallowed by the blurred, scenic background. The
only appealing font is that of the whimsical word, “Embrace”, so that the reader is aware or
reminded that the razor is the product being advertised. The tone of the advertisement is in fuel
???? neutral colors of beige and dark purple, giving the illusion that it’s chilly where the couple
is, but warm enough for the female to wear a sun dress to show off her silky, smooth legs. Silky
smooth legs, in which the razor was, no doubt, used on fragment.
The body language of the couple is presented in a sexual manner. Sitting at a small black
breakfast table for two, the models are leaning close into each other with smiling, with
passionately faces and holding hands while doing so. The man has his hand placed advancing on
the woman’s glimmering thigh, slightly under her knee-length flowing dress. The strategic
placement of these positions makes the viewer feel wanted and desired and that this product
works to achieve happiness.
The advertisement is bright and fun, which arouses warm feelings about the razor. The
daylight streaming down on the people also emphasizes positive feelings and happiness, which
make the reader feel good. “Reveal the Goddess in You” is the text written in bold letters on the
bottom of the page under the picture of the razor in it‘s package. This slogan is thought of for
makes a woman to feel beautiful, and empowered, and wanted by every man just like an actual
Greek goddess would be.
Venice Embrace promotes subconscious sexual desires for a woman to feel closer to a
loved one or to even capture a man through her smooth appearance. It is to be acknowledged that
the Gillette company relies heavily on attractive people depicted to be happy and drawn into
each other in their advertisements, which makes the majority of their readers feel that they can
achieve the same reaction if they use the Venice Embrace razor.
