ICZM Update - News, Consultations & Events – January & February 2011 Integrated Coastal Zone Management Update North West Coastal Forum Secretariat Contact Details Caroline Salthouse email: [email protected] Alasdair Lindop email: [email protected] Telephone: 0151 934 2966 Web: www.nwcoastalforum.co.uk NORTH WEST COASTAL FORUM NEWS Marine Spatial Planning and Transnational Partnership Working The Forum assisted staff from the University of Liverpool in hosting a workshop on MSP and Transnational Partnership Working in the Irish Sea, at the Merseyside Maritime Museum on February 10th. All six administrations that border the Irish Sea are currently involved in establishing new arrangements for marine planning, in parallel with the development of an Integrated Maritime Policy for the European Union and the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The workshop was brought together all those directly involved in plan development, as well as a cross section of stakeholders who have an interest in the Irish Sea and aimed to provide an opportunity to gain an overview of the new arrangements and to explore stakeholder views on the future development of transnational partnership working to support co-ordinated marine spatial planning in the Irish Sea region. Over 75 delegates from all administrations and across the sectors attended, and their input into discussions on the benefits of transnational partnership working and the potential benefits and challenges of different working options will be drawn together in a discussion note, which will be considered at a second workshop in late spring 2011. Coastal Engineering Solutions Conference Proceedings published The proceedings of the Coastal Engineering Solutions Conference held in Blackpool in March 2010 are now available online. Please visit the North West Coastal Forum’s website to download the report. REGIONAL NEWS New offshore draft Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) announced JNCC have formally advised a further two offshore draft SACs to Defra, including Pisces Reef Complex in the Irish Sea. The other are is Wight-Barfleur Reef in the English Channel and new shapefiles for the offshore draft SACs and offshore Areas of Search for SACs are now available to download from the JNCC website. Further information on the sites including the SAC Selection Assessment Document and the draft conservation objectives are available from this webpage: http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-4537 Marine Week 2011 in the North West The North West Wildlife Trusts are currently planning and co-ordinating events for the National marine week (July 30th – August 14th 2011). If you have any ideas or events already planned, the Wildlife Trusts would be keen to attend and offer help, as well as promoting their marine work on a regional scale, especially with regards to Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs). If you would be interested in the Wildlife Trusts attending an event, or would like more information about the week, please contact Cheryl Nicholson at [email protected] NATIONAL NEWS CPN website goes live! The Coastal Partnership Network (CPN) went live in January. The CPN exists to encourage the exchange of information and debate between Coastal Partnership Officers and to establish links with other coastal stakeholders. With over 50 Coastal Partnerships registered, the website forms an important focal hub for partnerships and interested coastal stakeholders. www.coastalpartnershipsnetwork.org.uk 1 ICZM Update - News, Consultations & Events – January & February 2011 Durham Heritage Coast wins UK Landscape Award In late 2010, the Durham Heritage Coast was voted the UK’s best landscape in the inaugural UK Landscape Awards. Over a century of coal waste tipping had endowed the coastline with notorious black beaches, but since being awarded Heritage Coast status in 2001, it has undergone a huge transformation. Thanks to the clean-up program ‘Turning the Tide’, managed by the Durham Heritage Coast Partnership, the coastline, which stretches from Sunderland to Hartlepool, is now unrecognisable from its industrial past. Wild grasslands, fauna and flora have been reintroduced and the natural processes of the tide have regenerated the beaches. The area is now attracting large numbers of visitors who can see one of the UK’s largest colonies of little terns and in summer, the rare Durham Argus Butterfly. For more information about the area, visit the Durham Heritage Coast website. Art & Coastal Change in East Anglia The Crown Estate has published a report detailing the use of art as a tool to study coastal change in East Anglia. The report examines how landscape art, dating back to the 18th century long before the advent of photography, may provide the only record of coastal conditions at that time and, depending on the accuracy of work concerned can form a useful benchmark when assessing the nature, scale and pace of coastal change over the last two centuries. To download the report for free, visit the Crown Estate website (login required) Fishing Focus Newsletter Winter Edition Published Defra has published the latest edition of Fishing Focus. The newsletter covers a wide range of topics, including progress on MCZs, the Marine Policy Statement, IFCA guidance on practice, Fishing for markets and fishing news on a variety of issues including the outcome of the Fisheries Council meeting. To download the article, visit the Defra website here INTERNATIONAL NEWS Europe's seas: Commission sets out criteria for good environmental status Last year, The EC adopted a decision outlining criteria necessary to achieve good environmental status (GES) for Europe’s seas. This is required under the Marine Strategy Frame Work, which aims to achieve good environmental status in all EU marine waters by 2020. The criteria for GES focuses on different aspects of marine ecosystems, including biological diversity, fish populations, litter and eutrophication, and have been based on scientific and technical advice provided by independent experts. In the UK, work is progressing through a series of workshops to identify UK specific indicators. For more information, visit the EC Environment website. Marine Knowledge 2020 The European Commission have launched a new initiative aiming to unlock and assemble data from different sources and facilitate their use for purposes beyond those that they were originally intended for. ‘Marine knowledge 2020’ will have 3 major benefits: Improving the efficiency of those who use marine data; opening new opportunities and driving marine sector innovation; reducing uncertainty in our knowledge of ocean behaviour. A prototype data network, the European Marine Observation and Data Network (WMODnet) has already been established. For more information, visit the EC Maritime Forum website ZSL Name Top 10 Endangered Corals As part of their EDGE programme, the Zoological Society of London has published a list of the ten most evolutionary distinct and globally endangered (EDGE) coral species in the world. The corals selected reflect the rich diversity of reef ecosystems and saving these species could hold the key to the future adaptation of coral reefs to climate change. The EDGE coral reef program will focus on training in-country scientists to carry out conservation research on the ten focal species and forming a global network of coral reef ambassadors, helping to empower and assist local communities in managing reef resources. To view the list of corals, visit the EDGE program website International Tidal Energy Summit & Awards 2011 Following the extremely successful 4th International Tidal Energy Summit & Awards in 2010 the organisers, Tidal Today, can confirm that this year’s conference, the '5th International Tidal Energy Summit & Awards' will take place in London in November 2010.
