General Background
Health is one of the basic needs after food and shelter. Every country puts health
on high priority. The long term objectives of health sectors in the country like
Nepal is to provide basic compulsory and humanitarian services-preventive,
curative and preliminary health care system on equitable, social justice. This
sector is responsible to develop personality by promoting physical condition of the
people. It is important to increase life expectancy of the people by reducing
morbidity, mortality and eliminating life-threatening disease like Cancer by means
of awareness programs in the community, in the schools and in the colleges and
institutions.
How and why Nepal Cancer Hospital to be established?
It was in March 2007, a very close relative of Dr. Purnima Gurung developed
cancer for which she took the patient to Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute in Delhi
where the patient was treated and healed. Since then she decided to do something
for the Nepalese people with Cancer who have no means of supporting themselves
and dying without treatment and care. It was such an unavoidable circumstances
that Dr. Gurung herself lost her father and one more relative with the same disease
died in last year. Her mother is still on oral medication for the same cause.
Looking at the number of cancer patients going out of the neighboring countries
are increasing day by day. An unofficial data of the cancer patients visiting Rajeev
Gandhi Cancer Institute , from Nepal is 60% of the total patients at that hospital.
For this very reason we firmly believe that we can provide the same class of
treatment to our Nepalese patients , so that we can retain our money in our own
land. Our's a beautiful country with fresh beautiful nature around where patients
can be treated well and give them the BEST care..
Introduction
We firmly believe that whereas "Cure is in the hand of the Lord, Care is definitely
in the hand of man" Additionally, we seek to reduce the incidence of cancer
through: Cancer awareness programs in school, educational institution and public by
means of developing education materials.
 Cancer detection camps in rural and urban areas.
 Free Cancer detection camps in slum and villages.
 Home care services for terminally ill patients through mobile care medical
teams.
 Palliative care unit.
 Free Cancer diagnostic center for medical AID to poor and needy patients.
 Training of doctors, nurses and paramedics for terminally ill cancer patients
and in palliative care.
 Counseling to patients as well as to family members.
 Treatments and follow- ups
Establishment of well equipped Cancer hospital
With the ever increasing rate of growth of population in Nepal,Nepal Cancer
Foundation is finding a similar rise in the number of people with cancer owing to
the pressure on the available hospital services. Compared to the overall
International Standard the Nepal Health System is rated very low. It was therefore
planned that well equipped modern hospital is a need of the hour. The 100 bed
Cancer/ General hospital will have an easy access for the local residents of the
Kathmandu valley which consists of 3 very densely populated districts of Nepal
viz. Kathmandu, Lalitpur and the Bhaktapur. Later as the reputation will grow
rapidly so will be the patients' referrals from other districts and even from beyond
the country. The hospital will have special equipment to improve the services to
the patients and to increase the ability of the health professionals to diagnose a
wider range of Cancer and other diseases.
At the moment, the project has assurances from various local people who had been
to Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute for their relatives' check-ups and treatments. And
also requests have been sent to the United States and Canada whose response have
been positive towards the establishment of the hospital. Any benevolent assistance
in this respect will be very helpful and highly appreciated.
Recently we got confirmation from very reputed organization named Global
Cancer Care, India who is willing to give us technical support as soon as we start
he cancer service in our hospital.
