Archeabacteria & Eubacteria *These 2 kingdoms are sometimes still grouped together as ‘Monera’ Archaebacteria are ancient bacteria and live in the harshest conditions (very hot, very salty, in digestive guts) Eubacteria – ‘true’ bacteria – are more common. Both are ‘prokaryotic’ and have a single strand of genetic information floating in the cytoplasm. There is no organized ‘nucleus’. Bacteria – are the oldest and most abundant group of living organisms. Some have fossil records! Some lived in harshest conditions (like our early Earth). Cyanobacteria (also called blue-green algae, but are NOT algae persay) helped, through photosynthesis, to provide early Earth with oxygen. Bacteria are most often responsible for decomposing dead organic matter into useable inorganic compounds for plants/animals. They can cause disease (strep throat, tetanus, gangrene, bubonic plague, cholera etc.) and can be helpful too (food digestion, fixation of nitrogen in soil for plants, production of dairy products, can ‘eat’ some harmful materials).
