July 1993 - April 1994, Chief Technician/Technical Manager, Northern Stage
Company. Responsible for the staging at Newcastle Playhouse and Gulbenkian
Studio Theatres of nine in-house rep productions and occasional tours; visiting
companies including the annual Royal Shakespeare Company Newcastle Season;
frequent jazz, comedy and dance festivals; lectures and conferences; fashion
shows and cookery competitions, etc.
March - July 1994, Systems Manager, Orbital Acoustics, responsible for designing
and implementing physical and IT systems for the storage, stock control, testing,
maintenance, despatch of some £4m-worth of sound equipment hired to West End
shows, tours, conferences, etc. together with technical consultancy, system
design, sales, hires, rigging, etc. (Continued on a part-time basis, 1997 and
1999).
April - December 1994, Technical Manager and Tutor in Technical Theatre, Hoxton
Hall (Hackney Community College), designing a course in Technical Theatre Arts
providing access to a degree course at Middlesex University, upgrading the
centre's technical facilities and providing technical support to in-house
productions and visiting companies.
July - August 1994, Manager, Church Hill Theatre and Little Theatre (the latter
designed, built and licensed from scratch in an empty hall) for Edinburgh Venue

University of Ulster. Also Technical Supervisor of The Riverside Theatre for a
summer variety show, student productions such as Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and onenight stands by visiting companies.
1974-77 and 1981-83, Work with Queen's University of Belfast Extra-Mural
Department's Delphic Players - responsible for the technical aspects of a course
(specialising in Scandinavian drama) leading to productions in the University's
drama studio under the direction of Dr. Louis Muinzer.
1983-87, Technical Director, Fringe Benefits Theatre Company, a fringe company
with Arts Council support based at Belfast's Crescent Arts Centre. Combined the
roles of Production Stage Manager, Set & Lighting Designer, Sound Engineer,
Master Carpenter, etc. for some 15 productions as well as running classes and
workshops in these areas for company members. From 1985 this work undertaken on
a sub-contract basis through my own company.
November 1984, Formed Just Between Ourselves Ltd, a small-scale production and
staging services company, granted Approved Manager status by the Independent
Theatre Council.
Directed Dario Fo & Franca Rame's one-woman plays A Woman Alone and The Same Old
Story for Belfast Fringe Festival, transferred to The Group Theatre, Belfast,
and then undertook a 4-week tour of Belfast community centres and arts centres,
hotels, schools, etc. throughout Northern Ireland.
Through this company I also undertook:Technical work - fit-ups, maintenance of lighting and sound installations, etc.
- for local companies such as the Lyric Theatre, Belfast Civic Arts Theatre,
Field Day Theatre Company.
Staging work for the regular programme of events at the Crescent Arts Centre music (rock, classical, modern, folk, jazz, ethnic), performance art, cabaret,
children's shows, puppets, dance, in-house theatre productions and visiting
companies such as Spare Tyre, 1982 Theatre Company, Azanian National Theatre,
Liverpool Everyman Youth Theatre, Theatre Omnibus, Sensible Footwear, The
Millies, Gwylan Dance Company, Irish Film & Theatre Company, etc.
1984/85/86, Technical Director for Belfast Fringe Festival: responsible for
planning and staging some 50 performance events over a 2-week period each year
plus workshops and other events.
Technical work for various Arts Council of Northern Ireland promotions: Bob
Tomson's (Queen's Theatre Hornchurch) production of Macbeth touring to schools
audiences; A Midsummer Music Festival staged by Cardiff Laboratory Theatre in
Belfast's Botanic Gardens with some 200 community participants (building a stage
on an island in an artificial lake); Jungle Bullion staged by Welfare State
International, again in the Botanic Gardens......Production management for
Ulster Youth Theatre's West Side Story (Grand Opera House, Belfast, Riverside

1978-79, responsible for the supervision of students provided with bursaries to
undertake on-the-job training in technical theatre.
Responsible for the performance programme at Belfast's Crescent Arts Centre,
1982-87, running classes and workshops for members of youth/fringe theatre and

administration, fundraising, publicity, finance, management of the group's
premises (comprising offices, large hall, stores and accommodation for two fulltime volunteers), placing volunteers with projects, liaison with local voluntary
and statutory bodies, supervision of students placed with the group.
1981-84, Administrative Civil Servant, Department of Economic Development,
Northern Ireland Civil Servicve - Staff Officer (Administration), Belfast
Employment Service. Initially in the Professional & Executive Personnel Division,
then heading a section responsible for the design of training programmes for
young people placed with employers under the Youth Training Programme together
with responsibility for the production of the monthly published employment
statistics for the Belfast area.
During intervals between theatre contracts: temporary/casual work such as moving
Watford College's Drama Department to new premises; redesigning Birmingham
Central Children's Library for a change of venue following a fire; driving and
courier work; computer consultancy for theatre companies and other arts
organisations.
