The End of the War

in 1917 the balance of the war tipped in favour of the allies
to this point in the war Germany and Austria having been fighting on two
fronts
the Western Front they battled with Britain and France supported by
Canada
the Eastern Front , Germany battled Russia

in 1917 Russia faced its own problems internally as the current
government was overthrown

this forced Russia to surrender to Germany taking them out of the war
-
German soldiers were then sent to the Western Front for a final push to
defeat the allies in France and Belgium

At the same time, as part of Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare,
the United States had entered the war after some its merchant ships had
been attacked and sunk

in the late summer and early fall of 1918, Canadian troops won a string of
stunning victories pushing German troops almost back to the German
border
the cost was 48 000 casualties including 9 000 dead
hungry and tired German soldiers surrender to Canadian troops after
Canada defeated one-quarter of their army
an armistice, the agreement to end fighting, had been arranged for
11:00am on November 11, 1918
