The Digestive System MR. COLELLA SCIENCE Discovery Education Video Discovery Education Video Clip Digestive System Vocabulary Mouth Esophagus Appendix Anus Colon Gallbladder Large Intestine Liver Rectum Pancreas Function of the Digestive System The digestive system is responsible for the processing and uptake of nutrition. Every cell in an organism needs energy and an array of nutrients to remain alive. Mouth The mouth is where digestion begins. The mouth has the teeth, tongue, and salivary glands. The teeth are used to chew the food and break it down into smaller pieces. The salivary glands and the tongue mix the food with saliva. Saliva helps move the food and contains chemicals that break down sugars. Esophagus The tube in the throat that transports food from the mouth to the stomach. It is a muscle that is about 10 inches long. Stomach The pear shaped sack that produces and stores hydrochloric acid. The acid helps break down the large molecules of food into smaller molecules. Food is broken down in the stomach and moves to the small intestine. Small Intestine The small intestine is 22 feet long. The main job of the small intestine is to absorb nutrients from the food and bring the nutrients to the blood. The remaining waste passed through the large intestine. Large Intestine It is sometimes called the colon. It holds the waste products until elimination can occur. The main function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the indigestible parts of food, so the body can use the water. The EXTRA parts Liver- produces bile Once the bile is produced, it is stored in the GALLBLADDER. Bile is used to help the small intestine break down fats . The PANCREAS produces pancreatic juices, which help break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in the small intestine. The APPENDIX is associated with the digestive system, but does not aid in the digestive process. The appendix can become inflamed and you need to have it removed. This is called appendicitis. How long does it take to digest foods? This depends on its composition(what it is made up of). Fatty meals take longer to digest. On average, food spends 2-3 hours in the stomach, six hours in the small intestine, and 50-60 hours in the large intestine. Digestion Fun Facts The average human being has over 400 different species of bacteria in their colon It takes approximately seven seconds for food to travel through the esophagus and reach the stomach An adult female’s small intestine is longer than the average adult male’s The liver has over 500 different functions, one of which is producing bile to break down digestive fats The stomach of an adult holds up to 1.5 liters of food and food stays here for 2 to 3 hours Although the large intestine is up to 4 inches in diameter, the small intestine is only 1 inch in diameter The approximate surface area of the small intestine is 2,700 feet; That’s over half the size of a basketball court! Hydrochloric acid, produced by the stomach, can dissolve metal but has no effect on plastic Digestion Fun Facts Estimates of how much saliva our bodies produce each day range from 1 to 3 liters The whole digestive tract is over 29 feet long, starting at the mouth and ending at the anus The stomach wall has three layers of muscles Food is cooled or warmed in the mouth until it is a good temperature for the body The large intestine is approximately 5 feet in length Muscles contract and relax in the esophagus to push food down to the stomach — it works even when you’re upside down! DIGESTION FUN FACTS! Paul Hunn, who lives in London, holds the world record for the loudest human burp.
