The Booster Calvary United Methodist Church June 2015 Lead me not into temptation… God knows those things that must be especially aware of their tempting of me. And I pray for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to strengthen my resistance by making me aware of the negative consequences. As you can see, it takes me a lot longer to pray this prayer when I make it personal. -------------------------------- Most every Sunday we recite the “Lord’s Prayer” together. But have you ever used it as a base from which you make it very personable? I do that on a regular basis. Let me put it down the way we usually use it Sunday morning. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as I forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. My personalized version goes something like this: My Father who is in heaven….. and then I add what I’m thankful for and what comes as my need to praise God for all that God is doing and has done in my life. Your will be done….. I speak about the things I’m concerned about and in my searching, begin surrendering those things to God. Your will be done in my life, in these circumstances, in every choice and decision that I must make. Give me this day my daily bread ….. becomes Lord grant me this day the things that I need, and the contentment to not be consumed with the things I don’t need. Sometimes there are specific things that God points out that are “wants” not needs and my need is to let them go to God’s timing and provision. Forgive me my sins…. And I am specific as to those I’m aware of and need forgiveness. As I forgive those who sin against me. Here too, I become specific as possible, naming the persons and what I see, from my perspective, to have happened. Forgiveness is the choice I make. It helps then for me to pray for those persons in a positive way, as difficult as it may be at time. We want to congratulate the new graduates. On the 50th day of Easter we celebrate the Spirit, through whom and in whom the people of God are created and recreated. Pentecost is sometimes called the church’s birthday, but might be more appropriately called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the fullness of baptism. The scripture tells us in Romans 8:22-27 that by pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts, God gives us the promised first fruit of eternal life so that we await God’s future in hope. In the celebration of the Day of Pentecost, you are encouraged to come to worship wearing something red. Come worship with us- you’ll be glad you did!
