Chapter 8 Review Questions
1. Why is it important for estheticians to have a basic understanding of electricity?
Estheticians should understand electricity because we work with electrotherapy
and also use electricity to power most of our machines.
2. What is the difference between conductors and insulators?
Conductors are anything that allows electricity to flow through it, whereas an
insulator does not allow any electricity to flow through it.
3. Describe the two types of electric current, and give examples of each.
Direct current is constant even flowing current that travels in one direction,
anything without a cord. Alternating current is rapid and interrupted current
flowing first in one direction and then in the opposite direction. Changes 60 times
per second. Alternating current is anything that is plugged in.
4. Define volt, amp, ohm, and watt.
Volt – measures the force that pushes the flow of electrons through a conductor.\
Amp – measures amount of electrical current (quantity of electrons flowing
through a conductor).
Ohm – measures the resistance of an electrical current.
Watt – measurement of how much energy is being used in one second.
5. Why should you look for the UL symbol on electrical devices?
The UL symbol means it is certified and safe to use.
6. What are the modalities used in electrotherapy? What kind of current is each
one.
Modalities are galvanic current, microcurrent, and tesla high frequency. Galvanic
is DC current and the rest are AC.
7. List the effects of the positive pole and the negative pole of galvanic current.
The positive pole produces an acidic reaction, it closes the skin, soothes nerves,
decreases blood supply, contracts blood vessels and hardens and firms tissue.
The negative pole produces and alkaline reaction. It opens the pores, stimulates
and irritates nerves, increases blood supply, expands blood vessels and softens
tissues.
8. What is iontophoresis? What is desincrustation?
Iontophoresis is infusing water-soluable products into the skin using electrical
current. Desincrustation is softening and emulsifying sebum and blackheads in
the follicles.
9. What is microcurrent and what are the benefits?
Microcurrent is low level of electricity that mirrors our own natural electrical
impulses. The benefits include, improving blood and lymph circulation, increasing
muscle tone, restoring elasticity, reducing redness and inflammation, minimizing
healing time and improving the barrier function of the skin.
10. Name the benefits of tesla high frequency current. \
High frequency benefits are stimulating circulation, increases elimination and
absorption, increases metabolism, improves germincidal action and relieves
congestion.
11. What is the electromagnetic spectrum? What is visible light?
The electromagnetic structure is all forms of energy whose spectrum room
longest to shortest wavelengths. Visible light is electromagnetic radiation that we
can see.
12. List and describe the five main types of light therapy.
Lasers, LED, infared, IPL, and UV.
13. Why must exposure to ultraviolet rays be carefully monitored?
Uv rays, if overexposed can cause skin disorders, skin aging and even cancer.
14. What does the acronym laser stand for?
Light amplification stimulation emission of radiation.
