Holiness/Sanctification
John 10:36 - what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the
world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?
John 17:17 - Sanctify them by the truth, your word is truth.
John 17:19 - For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
Acts 20:32 - “Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and
give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
Acts 26:18 - to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of
Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are
sanctified by faith in me.'
Romans 1:4 - and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by
his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 6:19 - I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations.
Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so
now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness.
Romans 6: 22 - But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God,
the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
Rom 15:16 - to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. He gave me the priestly duty of
proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to
God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
I Cor 1:2 - To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be
his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ—their Lord and ours:
I Cor 1:30 - It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom
from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
1 Cor 6:11 - And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you
were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
I Cor 7:14 - For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the
unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children
would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
2 Cor 1:1 - Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the
church of God in Corinth, together with all his holy people throughout Achaia:
2 Cor 7:1 - Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from
everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.
Eph 1:1 - Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To God's holy people in Ephesus,
the faithful in Christ Jesus
Eph 1:4 - For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his
sight. In love
Eph 1:18 - I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the
hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,
Eph 2:21 - In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the
Lord.
Eph 3:5 - which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been
revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets.
Eph 3:18 - may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and
long and high and deep is the love of Christ,
Eph 4:24 - and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
Eph 5:3 - But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of
impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.
Eph 5:26-27 - to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and
to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but
holy and blameless.
Phil. 1:1 - Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God's holy people in Christ Jesus

Col. 1:2 - To God's holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters[fn] in Christ: Grace

Col 1:12 - and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the

1 Thess 2:10 - You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we

1 Thess 3:13 - May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the
presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
*** 1 Thess 4:3-4 - It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual
immorality;that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and
honorable.
*** 1 Thes 4:7-8 - For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.Therefore, anyone
who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you
his Holy Spirit.
*** 2 Thes 1:9 - He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have
done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus
before the beginning of time
1 Thess 4:4 - that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and
honorable,
2 Thess 2:13 - But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the
Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit
and through belief in the truth
1 Tim 2:2 - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all
godliness and holiness.
1 Tim 2:15 - But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and
holiness with propriety.
2 Tim 2:21 - Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special
purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
Tit 1:8 - Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled,
upright, holy and disciplined. (elders are to be holy)
Phm 1:5 - because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus.
Heb 2:11 - Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same
family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.
Heb 3:1 - Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your
thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.
*** Heb 7:26 - Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set
apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. (Jesus Holiness allows him to save us)
Heb 10:10 - And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus
Christ once for all. (we have been made holy by the sacrifice of Christ)
Heb 10:14 - For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
Heb 10:29 - How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has
trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the
covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
Heb 12:10 - They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for
our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.
*** Heb 12:14 - Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without
holiness no one will see the Lord.
Heb 13:12 - And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through
his own blood.
*** 1 Peter 1:15-16 - But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;for it is
written: “Be holy, because I am holy.
I Peter 1:2 1 Peter 2:5 - you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy
priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ
1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special
possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his
wonderful light
*** 2 Peter 3:11 - Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you
to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
Jesus and Holiness
Jesus was set apart (holy) before God and came to this world to save us
and to show us how to live. Holiness is a way of life for the disciple of
Jesus, but what does it mean to be holy - to be set apart for God’s
purposes.
John 17:1-12
 Jesus is praying for his disciples
 God gave the disciples to Jesus
 He gave everything he had to them.
 He was leaving them behind - was asking God for their protection, as
he had protected them
John 17: 13-19
 Jesus gave them the word and the world hated them
 Because they are not of the world.
 “I don’t want you to take them out of the world
 “I need you to protect them
 THEY ARE NOT of the world - any more than I am”
 Here is the ultimate request:
o “Sanctify them with the truth - your word is truth”
o “You sent me to the world - I am leaving them in the world”
o I sanctify myself for them.
o The purpose: “That they might be truly sanctified”
Tonight we are talking about holiness:
 Holy - “Stained Glass” word - only found in churches
 Important: Holy = Sanctified
Holiness = Sanctification To make
Holy = to Sanctify
Have to understand the concept of Sanctification first:
2 Tim 2:19-21  Context - preparedness for doing God’s work
 God’s solid foundation includes two things to remember:
o God knows who are his
Anyone who confesses Jesus MUST turn away from
wickedness
 Repentance:
 Repentance - the repentance of Baptism
 Ongoing repentance in our lives
Paul turns to an example in his writing:
o Pottery for noble purposes and ignoble
 Today - don’t use a chamber pot for a chafing dish.
 Pika - stainless steel bedpans.
o Paul then relates that to us!
 If a man cleanses himself:
 I cleanse my self for noble purposes
 This cleansing makes me HOLY (“Set apart” - different)
 I then become
 useful to the master
 prepared for any good work.
This is sanctification - this is holiness
o Hagiazo - to purify, to consecrate, to venerate, to set apart, to
separate from profane things
o To be useful to the master we must be “set apart”
o The noun form is translated “saint” (Hagios)
o It’s the same root we use for “sanctuary” ( a place set apart, a
holy place)
Simple example - tablets and phones in airplane mode - sanctified set apart from the world for God’s purpose.

 I am striving to be a disciple of Jesus
 Jesus was holy, sanctified - set apart for the purposes of God, set
apart from the profane things of the world
 Jesus “sanctified me by his blood” by his own death
o I am in the world, I am “set apart”
o I am in the world, but “not of the world”.
Jesus was holy
 John 17:19 - “For them I set myself apart, that they too may be truly
set apart.”
o Sanctification is something we decide to do
 Jesus set himself apart so that we could also be that way



He consecrated himself, purified himself for God’s
purpose.
Acts 26:15-18 - We are sanctified by faith in Jesus.
o This is also something we DO - it’s something that is done to
us.
o We turn from darkness to light
 Receive forgiveness of sins
 Receive a place among those who are set apart by faith
in Jesus.
 In God’s eyes we are different because we have decided
to live like Jesus
 In God’s eyes we are sanctified
I Cor. 6: 9-11
o You were part of the world
o You were washed and sanctified in the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ.
o You were “set apart” - you were made different.
Gospels do not talk about Jesus’s Holiness.
 Romans 1:1-4 o I was Jesus’s Holiness the that declared him the son of God
o It was Jesus’s Holiness that allowed his resurrection from the
dead
 Heb 7:23-26 o Jesus’s holiness sets him apart as a priest - able to save us
