Bellringers Week 9 (Due 3/7)
Monday:
Read the passage below, and answer the questions.
A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given
population. It is a regularly occurring and official count of a particular population.[1] The term is used mostly in
connection with national population and housing censuses; other common censuses include agriculture,
business, and traffic censuses. The United Nations defines the essential features of population and housing
censuses as "individual enumeration, universality within a defined territory, simultaneity and defined
periodicity", and recommends that population censuses be taken at least every 10 years. United Nations
recommendations also cover census topics to be collected, official definitions, classifications and other useful
information to coordinate international practice.[2][3]
1. A census is
A. a general agreement.
B. a procedure which systematically records population information.
C. a unit of measurement for large countries.
D. Solely an agricultural term.
2. A census is necessary in order to
A. keep accurate information about the population of a country.
B. avoid rebellion within countries of large populations.
C. continue providing important services to the entire population.
D. Keep order in governmental organizations
Tuesday:
James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix; November 27, 1942 – September 18, 1970)
was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. Despite a brief mainstream career spanning four years, he is
widely regarded as one of the most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the
most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as "arguably the
greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music."[1]
Hendrix was inspired musically by American rock and roll and electric blues. He favored overdriven amplifiers
with high volume and gain, and was instrumental in developing the previously undesirable technique of guitar
amplifier feedback. He helped to popularize the use of a wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock, and was the first
artist to use stereophonic phasing effects in music recordings. Holly George-Warren of Rolling Stone
commented: "Hendrix pioneered the use of the instrument as an electronic sound source. Players before him had
experimented with feedback and distortion, but Hendrix turned those effects and others into a controlled, fluid
vocabulary every bit as personal as the blues with which he began."[2]
After reading the selection, write one paragraph explaining why Jimi Hendrix is “regarded as one of the most
influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music.”
Wednesday:
Read the following passage and answer the questions below.
Energy drinks may be unsafe for some children especially those with diabetes, seizures, heart abnormalities or
mood and behavior disorders, according to a report by researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of
Medicine published in the journal Pediatrics this week; however the beverage industry fiercely disputes this.
Senior author of the report Dr. Steven E. Lipshultz, professor and chair of pediatrics, associate executive dean
for child health at the Miller School, said until we know more about the effects of energy drinks on the health of
children and teenagers, they should be discouraged from drinking them on a routine basis.
"We wanted to raise awareness about the risks. Our systematic review suggests that these drinks have no benefit
and should not be a part of the diet of children and teens," he said.
For their report Lipshultz and colleagues reviewed the current published literature on energy drinks and
concluded they have no health benefits for children and that many of the ingredients they contain are
understudied and not regulated.
1. According to Dr. Lipshultz, children and teens should
A. drink energy drinks often.
B. continue drinking energy drinks as they have been
C. increase their caffeine intake
D. be discouraged from drinking energy drinks
2. If the energy drink trend continues to rise, what problems could arise?
A.
Older adults will also begin drinking the energy drinks.
B.
Young people will have increased risk of emergency situations related to energy drinks.
C.
People will stop drinking energy drinks and realize they are bad for their health.
D.
The government will place a ban on all caffeinated beverages to avoid these issues.
Thursday:
Read the passage below, and summarize what you read in 3-5 sentences on the lines below.
Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri is a 1996 tactical first-person shooter video game developed and published
by Looking Glass Technologies. Set in a science-fictional depiction of the 24th century, the game follows a
faction of humans who colonize the Alpha Centauri star system to escape from a totalitarian Earth government.
The player assumes the role of Nikola ap Io, the leader of an Alpha Centauri military unit, and undertakes
missions against pirates and the Hegemony.
Terra Nova has been cited as one of the first squad-oriented games with three-dimensional (3D) graphics; the
player is often assisted by artificial-intelligence-controlled teammates who may be given tactical commands.
Conceived by Looking Glass after the completion of their first game, Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss,
Terra Nova was subject to a long and difficult development process, caused in part by the production of its full
motion video cut scenes. The game's engine can render 3D outdoor environments and simulate physics; the
latter enables such effects as procedural animation.
Terra Nova's critical reception was highly positive. Reviewers praised its tactical elements, and several
compared it to the 1995 video game MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat. However, reception of its graphics
was mixed, and many noted the game's steep system requirements. Despite critical acclaim and sales in excess
of 100,000 units the game was a commercial failure; it did not recoup its development costs. While it was
intended to be the first in a series, its low sales led the company to cancel plans for a sequel.
Friday:
We are all scared of something, whether it is something physical like spiders or snakes, or something
more abstract such as heights or small spaces. What is your greatest fear? What is your reaction when you are
placed in a situation with your fear?
