One of its most lasting contributions is the organized system of thought called philosophy. The Greed word for philosophy means "love of wisdom." As the Greek philosopher Socrates puts it (in one of the Dialogues of his pupil Plato), "The unexamined life is not worth living." Guiding Questions: Students should be able to answer the following questions before the exam: How do physical characteristics and human characteristics define and differentiate regions? How do historians use inquiry and other sciences to understand the past? What were the first civilizations to emerge? How did Western civilization arise from a synthesis of classical Greco-Roman civilization, Judeo-Christian influence and the cultures of Northern European peoples promoting a cultural unity in Europe?
