Explanation of Algebraic Equation Poster Project
To help ensure students understand algebraic equations, they have been
asked to work with a partner and develop a simple equation in the form, y=mx+b.
Using this equation, they then must write a word problem which matches the
equation they have chosen. After they have checked with me that the word
problem matches the equation, they are then given a half poster board and asked to
complete the following additional steps:
 Make a T-chart that gives five or six values of X and Y correctly.
 Draw a basic XY graph showing the line that corresponds to their
equation. They need only graph in quadrant one (positive numbers).
 The Equation can be Additive, [ Y=X+5 or Y=X-6 ]
 The Equation can be Multiplicative, [ Y=2X or Y = 1/4X ]
 The Equation can be in Y=mX+b form, [ Y=2x+3 or Y=1/3X-2 ]
 Write by 1 to 2 paragraph explanation of how to solve the equation
and graph the line correctly.
 Briefly present their equation, word problem, T-chart, graph and
explanation to the classroom.
Students should type their word problem and explanation. Should they
require small changes, having the document saved in their Google Account helps
significantly. Students may graph their linear equation on any computer program,
spreadsheet, or using the printed graphs provided in the classroom. Most find that
graphsketch.com works well. They do not need to decorate their posters but this is
allowed. The students’ grades are based on the accuracy of their graph, T-Chart
and that their word problem matches the equation they have chosen. A significant
part of the grade will be the completeness/level of detail in their explanation
paragraph(s). I will also consider the overall effort level, neatness, and their class
presentation in determining the grade. Due to the effort and time required, the
assignment will count as three daily grades.
Students will be given time in class to work on this assignment but have
been encouraged to work on this at home if possible. My hope is that this activity
will provide the students with an opportunity to connect the meaning of equations
with word problems rather than just solving equations. Please email if you have
any questions about this assignment. This project will be due no earlier than
Friday, April 22nd.
