The Mendel Challenge!
Gregor Mendel (mid 1800’s) is considered to be the father of genetics. You know more about genetics than
Mendel did! Even after his work, he still had no idea what a “gene” was. He called it a “factor”. He also
knew nothing about chromosomes and the process of cell division. Mendel’s discoveries were based on
observations of heredity in pea plants. What follows are Mendel’s results in graphic form. The steps have been
separated so that you may consider each individually. For each step do two things: 1. Describe what Mendel
did and what the results were (phenotypes only!). 2. Explain the results from what you know about
chromosomes, genes and Mendel’s principles (genotypes!). Write as a geneticist. If there is a vocabulary term
that describes what you are trying to say, use it. Explain fully!

AFTER PRINTING (Not yet!)... go back and draw in punnett squares to the right of the figures that represent
each step in Mendel’s experimental design. You should have 5 punnett squares. Include genotypic and
phenotypic ratios.
SHOW ALL WORK!
(That means list and tally each genotype and phenotype to show how you
arrive at the ratio.)
