SECOND GRADE NEWS 5-3-13 Dear Parents, In math this week, we continued to use measurements. The focus was on estimating the lengths of objects in yards, feet, inches, meters, and centimeters. The main objective was for the children to increase their mathematical proficiency by making use of the structure of objects and measuring tools. First they matched the objects to the most appropriate and efficient tools and then estimated the lengths of the objects by comparing them to these known lengths. Estimating lengths is certainly a necessary life skill. To finish the activity, we did actual measurements and compared these to the estimates. Mrs. McCombe is coordinating wonderful art projects with our study of space. The children created scenes looking out of spaceship windows. They also made a papiermâché solar system that will hang from our classroom ceiling. The back bulletin board of our classroom is decorated with a colorful mural of the solar system made by the students. It serves as a visual resource during our study. This week the class has continued to write space adventure stories with some interesting plots. They first used a graphic organizer to plan their stories and then began the drafting process. After revising and editing their work, many people have moved on to typing the stories. We will publish these in books made in shapes related to our space study. In Language Arts we have been working on a variety of skills such as syllabication, using cause and effect to increase comprehension, suffixes, antonyms, and present and past tense verbs. Auggie was a great Star! We enjoyed learning more about him and his favorite activities. The class wrote wonderful paragraphs and drew great pictures about Auggie. Aidan will be our next Star. Reminders: Library books are due on Wednesdays. Please remember to bring or wear sneakers for PE. Your child needs to wear jeans or dark pants or shorts (not too short) and sneakers for the Spring Concert on May 30. Sincerely, Barby Michel
