Serf-A person in condition of servitude, required to render services to the lord. Nomad-A member of a people or tribe that has no permanent home but moves about from place to place. People you need to know and what they did Christopher Columbus- Sailed for the ocean blue b1492. He tried to find route to the east by going west, attempted 4 times. He found the Bahamas. And he sailed for Spain. Portugal denied him two times. Ralph Lane- Establishes first colony on Roanoke Island. Was the ships captain. Leader of the colony. Initially friendly with the Croatan Indians. Stayed back with the colonists, colony was lost. John White- He left Roanoke Island to go back to England to get supplies. Came back 3 yrs later and couldn’t find the colonists behind. Went back to England 20 yrs later came back to look for lost colony. Map maker. John Smith- Leader of Jamestown colony. Made friends with the Powhatan Indians that helped them. He returned to England then things went bad in the colony. Fighting and starvation. When the following Spring arrived, There were only 60 settlers left. Things to know! Pre contact culture groups- Paleo-Indian, archaic, woodland, and Mississippian Indians. Know them in order!
