The University

Social Science Division
Social Sciences is one of four academic Divisions in the University, each with considerable
devolved budgetary and financial authority, and responsibility for providing a broad strategic
focus across its constituent disciplines. Thirteen departments, one faculty, and three crossdivisional research units come under the aegis of the division which spans the full range of
social science disciplines with links into the humanities and physical sciences (including
Law, Management, Economics, Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Social Policy,
Area Studies, Development Studies, Education, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geography,
Public Policy). There are over 700 academic staff, 2,700 graduate students (postgraduate
taught and postgraduate research), and 1900 undergraduates working and studying in the
division.
The division is established as a world-leading centre for research in the social sciences and
regularly sits at the highest levels of international league tables of one form or another. It is
the largest grouping of social science disciplines in the UK and it is also home to several of
Oxford’s most widely recognised teaching programmes, such as PPE, the BCL, the MPhils
in International Relations, in Economics, and in Development Studies, and the nationally
regarded PGCE. We believe that excellence in teaching and research is synergistic and

Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School
The Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School (INET Oxford,
www.inet.ox.ac.uk) was established in May 2012 as a result of a major grant to the
University of Oxford by the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET,
www.ineteconomics.org ). INET is a philanthropic foundation based in New York that was
founded in 2009 to promote innovative, cross-disciplinary, policy-relevant economic
research. INET Oxford was established by INET and University of Oxford to become a
major hub for leading-edge economic research. INET Oxford is a Research Centre within
the Oxford Martin School and has five programmes: Complexity Economics, Economic
Modelling, Employment Equity and Growth, Ethics and Economics, and Economic
Development, each led by a senior academic Director or co-Directors. The Executive
Director of INET Oxford is Eric Beinhocker. INET Oxford faculty, researchers and graduate
students have affiliations and collaborations with a number of the University Departments
and Schools, including Economics, Physics, Maths, Computer Science, Geography,
Philosophy, and Sociology, the Saïd Business School, the Blavatnik School of Government,
and the Oxford-Man Institute for Quantitative Finance.

School of Geography
The School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE) is comprised of the School of
Geography, the Environmental Change Institute, the Transport Studies Unit and the Smith
School of Enterprise and the Environment. Housed in the Oxford University Centre for the
Environment (OUCE) building in the university science area, SoGE has access to high
quality laboratory facilities, classrooms and offices for academic staff, researchers and
postgraduate students.
The School of Geography at Oxford is one of the founding Geography departments in the
UK. It is an intellectually vibrant, research-intensive academic department at the forefront of
British geography and international scholarship with statutory professorships and more than
22 further academic staff. The School has research excellence in its core disciplines, one of
the UK's leading Undergraduate Honour Schools in Geography and a world-class
International Graduate School. There are approximately 250 undergraduates and over 90
postgraduate research students. In addition there are about 100 students doing the one-year
taught MSc courses. The School has five major research clusters, with permeable
boundaries and significant cross-cutting interests. Biodiversity, Climate Systems and Policy,
Landscape Dynamics, Technological Natures: Materials, Cities, Politics, and
Transformations: Economy, Society and Place. These clusters are underpinned by external
research funding; support staff; specialist computing and laboratory facilities; active
postgraduate and postdoctoral communities; and non-academic collaborations. Additional
major research initiatives include the African Environments Programme and Oxford Water
Futures Programme. The School also hosts the NERC Macronutrients Cycles Programme.
Environmental Change Institute (www.eci.ox.ac.uk) is an interdisciplinary unit
administered within the School of Geography and the Environment. ECI undertakes research
on environmental issues, teaches an MSc in Environmental Change and Management, and
fosters university-wide networks and outreach on the environment. Founded in 1991 through
benefactions, ECI was designed to answer questions about how and why the environment is
changing and how canwe respond through public policy, private enterprise, and social
initiatives. ECI research and teaching is characterised by a focus on global and regional
environmental change, projects that bring together the natural and social sciences, and by
an orientation to applied and public policy. Many of the research projects have a goal of
influencing and informing public policy and decisions about the environment. The Institute is
currently organized around three major research themes - Climate, Energy, and
Ecosystems. Most ECI staff are full time researchers and scientists working on specific
externally funded projects within these research themes although we also host a number of
senior research fellows working more independently on cross-cutting issues. We have a
thriving body of doctoral and post-doctoral students. Many researchers and students
contribute to MSc teaching.
The Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment (www.smithschool.ox.ac.uk) was
established with a benefaction by the Smith family in 2007 with the intention of promoting
research, teaching, and engagement with enterprise (public and private) on issues such as
environmental management, performance, and innovation. The School has 3 research
programmes: environmental economics and policy, corporate environmental management,
and the role of financial institutions and markets in promoting long-term environmental
sustainability. As well, the School is concerned with 3 research themes including natural
capital, the financing and provision of infrastructure, and climate change and policy. As
such, it has a number of significant external research partnerships and works with both the

Environmental Change Institute and the Transport Studies Unit to underwrite research
excellence in these areas. The Smith School also has a number of Business Fellows,
bringing to the University people from industry, consulting firms, and related enterprises who
have an interest in promoting the goals and objectives of the School.

Overview of the role
The successful candidate will work on a project on low-carbon growth. The main goal of the
project is to devise practical and politically implementable policies and institutional structures
to create economic signals to spur the development of new, breakthrough low-carbon
technologies and to rapidly drive deployment of low-carbon technologies and infrastructure,
with a view to determining the optimum mix and integration of development and deployment
policies.
The research is likely to include ex-post analysis and ex-ante judgement of the effectiveness
of cap-and-trade, carbon taxes and other policy instruments aimed less directly at reducing
greenhouse gas emissions. Such other policies may include performance standards (e.g.
fuel efficiency standards, appliance standards, building codes), utility regulation (e.g.
renewable portfolio requirements, fuel content requirements, energy efficiency programs),
smart urban design, and policies that encourage innovation (basic R&D support, tax
incentives). The research will also integrate insights from leading-edge economic and multidisciplinary techniques including behavioural and experimental economics, theories of
complex systems, and evolutionary views of institutions and regulation.
Responsibilities/duties













Undertake economic analysis, systems modelling, empirical research, and political and
political economy analysis.
Candidate will develop skills in “new economics” techniques such as those described
above and utilise those tools and approaches in his or her work.
Work in close collaboration with other INET Oxford & Smith School staff and projects,
including collaboration with major international initiatives such as the New Climate
Economy, the US DOE SunShot project, and the EC GrowthCom project.
Prepare papers for publication in academic and public policy journals, working papers,
policymaker briefing notes, project reports, presentations at academic and think tank
conferences and workshops, and contributions to general media publications including
blogs and social media.
Work closely with INET Oxford’s senior leadership to ensure that the output of work has
an impact in the public policy sphere.
Potentially present findings in international climate policy forums such as those
convened by the UNFCCC.
Work with Centre Manager to ensure that project budget remains on track, ensure grant
funds are used appropriately, and act as good steward of Oxford resources.
Contribute to and provide leadership for wider INET Oxford and Smith School activities
including seminars and group meetings.
Present research outputs at conferences, workshops and symposia.
Oversee the day to day management of the project, develop workplans, monitor
progress against the milestones and deliverables, and highlight any risks to or issues to
the Director as appropriate.
Under supervision of the Project Director, participate in the development of research
project expansion in this area.
Prepare report summarising results for funder on an annual basis.

Essential
 Postdoctoral training in relevant research areas (though we will also consider recent
PhDs for who this will be the first postdoctoral position).
 Track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications on relevant topics. For
candidates at an early state of their career a minimum one publication in a high-quality
journal is required with strong evidence of the further publications at this level are
forthcoming.
 A track record of interdisciplinary research collaboration and engagements,
demonstrating the ability to work across disciplinary boundaries.
 The ability to contribute to organisation of seminars, workshops and conferences.
Experience of giving research seminars to an inter-disciplinary audience.
Desirable
 Clear conceptual thinking and political and/or economic analysis is required.
Quantitative skills, in particular data analysis skills, are desirable.
 Knowledge of growth economics, the economics of climate change, climate policy (and
relevant national and international institutions)
 Track record of successful grant writing.
