An opportunity has arisen for motivated and experienced individuals to undertake these challenging
posts.
The Emergency Department has a patient attendance of 115 000 patients per year and provides a high
level of care to patients presenting with minor injuries to acute medical and surgical emergencies.
Providing Emergency Care services to the population of Edinburgh, East and Mid Lothian serving a
population of approx 800,000 people. The Emergency Department also provides pre-hospital care
team Medic 1 and trauma services for south east Scotland.
The Nurse Practitioner service is integral to the department , working to a high level of clinical decision
making and a wide scope of practice.
Post holders are expected to have a recognised ENP qualification (Minor Injuries or equivalent). We
will consider applicants who are currently undertaking such training.
Successful applicants will be part of a dynamic team of Nurse Practitioners within the Emergency
Department team. Professional development opportunities will be available to successful candidates,
such as undertaking Acute Illness/Clinical Decision Making training and/or Non-Medical Prescribing.
Applicants will need to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of professional and operational
issues within the speciality and have proven record of personal development and expanded practice.
Evidence of continuing professional development, computer literacy and good communication skills are
essential.
These posts will be appointed to NHS Lothian and may involve rotation to other hospital sites though

2. JOB PURPOSE
The remit of this post is:
The post holder has professional and managerial responsibility for a case load of patients allocated to the
specialist service within Accident & Emergency, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. This is in an acute hospital
setting.
The post holder will work hours that meet the service needs, including rotation onto night shift.
Ensure the highest standard of personalised nursing care is delivered to patients and their families in
partnership with all members of the multi disciplinary team.
Responsibility for the assessment of care needs and the delivery and maintenance of optimal care outcomes.
The post holder is expected to motivate staff to provide high standards of care by acting as a role model.

service provision for patients within the minor injury / minor illness speciality.

5. ROLE OF DEPARTMENT/SERVICE:
The Department of Accident & Emergency is a nationally and internationally acclaimed unit, providing a
comprehensive A&E and minor injury / minor illness service to the population of the Lothians and South East of
Scotland
To provide a high quality, safe and supportive environment in order to care for patients within the Accident &
Emergency setting meeting the identified physical and psycho-social needs.
6. KEY RESULT AREAS
Professional
Practice at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct
Develop the role by using evidence-based practice and continuously improve own knowledge, following
PREP guidelines.
Conduct clinical evidence based practice in accordance with national SIGN Guidelines and
clinical standards. (e.g. cancer planning nursing framework).

Leadership and Management
Lead relevant nursing staff within the Accident and Emergency service ensuring that patient needs are

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK
The post is largely self-directed however work maybe assigned by the A&E Consultant Medical staff in response
to the needs of patients in the A&E minor injury / minor illness service.
Referrals to the A&E service are generated from Lothian and South East of Scotland.
Work is reviewed by the Clinical nurse manager of the Accident and Emergency Department, and also by the
A&E Consultant Medical staff on a regular basis.
The Post Holder will have a Professional Personal Development Plan, which is reviewed 6 and 12 monthly by
the delegated line manager.
The post holder will act as an independent Nurse Prescriber, or dispense medications autonomously, under
LUHD NP Patient Group Directions if not in possession of this qualification.
The post holder is expected to participate in other professional areas relating to A&E department in general.
This involves participating in Divisional Unit meetings thus keeping updated on local issues of concern.
The post holder will audit the levels of activity by keeping records of consultations. The patient Trak system can
be used to track NP and patient activity.
9. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
The post holder will be expected to make clinical and professional autonomous decisions on a daily basis,
including the provision of advice to the multidisciplinary team.
The post holder will work independently and autonomously, and may treat and discharge patients; arrange
follow-up; or refer to another member of the multidisciplinary team for advice / admission.
Informed clinical decision-making with regard to patients’ health care, through stringent monitoring of the
patient’s condition and acting on clinical judgements. NPs have wide discretion to accept those patients whose
presentations are within their parameters of practice. Such decisions may be complex, involving multiple
factors. Judgements are made taking into account priority of patient care and availability of resources.
The post holder will act as an independent Nurse Prescriber, or dispense medications autonomously, under
LUHD NP Patient Group Directions if not in possession of this qualification.
Acting as the patients advocate to ensure their rights are upheld, when identifying, screening and recruiting
subjects into clinical research studies.
Freedom to act is guided by precedent and clearly defined Divisional policies, protocol/procedures and codes of
conduct in accordance with NMC regulations, Clinical and Staff Governance Framework.

Illness course or Nurse Practitioner Degree.
