Active Schools Mini Motiv8 Club Lesson Plan Lesson Plan 8 Creepy Jungles School Age Group Purpose Date Explain principle of session – fun / non competitive / stickers and reward scheme Reinforce basic concepts such as warm / cool down Introduce children to a variety of different sports and movements; it may be helpful to take pictures to help explain Explain purpose of whistle – one blast and they should sit down as fast as possible and be silent! Preparation Whistle 8 Hoops Water and cups / encourage use of individual water bottles. Warm Up Introduce yourself as “King of the Jungle”. At random points shout “King of the jungle” and the group have to respond with ‘Tarzan call’, beating the chest! Have group pretend to be ‘Monkeys in the jungle’; group to start walking; Leader shouts “Tiger behind you”, group starts running and then when Leader shouts “He’s right behind you” they have to pretend to climb a tree (Pulse raiser) (Make group aware that they are not allowed to climb on the wall bars for this.. it’s only pretend!) Instruct group - ”You are now a vulture, flying high in the sky; you spy a small animal on the floor of the jungle and swoop down to pick it up. After you catch your dinner you head for the sky again. (the children will be running around with arms out, then when catching the food they will crouch down and afterwards jump straight up as if taking off” (all round workout, jumping strengthens the heart, muscles, and bones and improves agility and coordination) They are now a wild frog, relaxing in the sun on a nice hot rock, he is stretching his legs out and then his arms, and then he relaxes them again. Repeat this 5 times (Stretching the leg, arm and shoulder muscles) Activity 1 Jungles on Fire The ‘hunter’ stands in the middle of the space. Everybody else lines up at one end of the space and are given the name of an animal (Bear, Lion, Elephant, Snake). The King of the jungle calls out an animal name. People given that animal name must cross from one end of the space to the other (doing an impression of the animal as they go). The hunter catches one of them, who becomes the new hunter and continues the game. If the King of the Jungle shouts ‘jungles on fire’ everybody must run. To make this game faster, have two or more hunters. Activity 2 Animal relays Split into teams, give each child in the team a different animal, They then have to go from one end of area to the other impersonating the animal and then run back to their team. Warm Down Monkeys – hands under the armpits Crocodiles – arms extended like ‘snapping jaws’ Vultures – wide flapping arms Frogs – two footed jumps Bring group together and sit them down on floor / use recovery time to reinforce some of key points; Get them to jog slowly like a ‘prowling panther’ and then reduce the tempo, by becoming a ‘walking monkey’ and then a snake. Once down on the ground, run through some stretches by asking them to point to a muscle group and then Leader suggests a stretch.. Why is it important to exercise – strengthen heart, skeleton, muscles etc. Name a couple of the major muscles used – e.g. quadriceps, hamstrings. *Note: If you have any ideas for a new Mini Motiv8 theme or lesson plan, please feel free to send a copy to your Active Schools Coordinator using the blank Mini Motiv8 lesson plan provided on the Active Schools website. Where appropriate the lesson plan can then be placed on the Active Schools Website as an additional resource for staff & volunteers working with children.
