JAPAN
Japan is a country in East Asia with a population of around 128 million. It consists of over 3.000
islands, with most of the population living on the four biggest ones: Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and
Shikoku.
The capital of Japan is Tokyo, a huge city on Honshu. Tokyo and its neighbouring cities have a total
population of over 30 million, making them the most populous urban area in the world.
Japan´s “economic miracle” in the second half of the 20th century led to fast economic growth and a
great increase in prosperity. Despite a long recession in recent years, its GDP ( Gross Domestic
Product – a measurement of the size of a country´s economy) is still the second biggest in the world
after the United States.
Prosperity and a healthy diet are two of the reasons why Japan has a higher life expectancy than
almost any other country in the world. However, most experts say the Japanese population will soon
begin to decrease because couples are having fewer children than they used to.
Forest and mountains, including around 200 volcanoes, cover a lot of Japan. The country´s position
on a “fault line” on the Earth´s surface means that earthquakes happen occasionally – the last very
serious one took place in 1995 near the city of Kobe.
Japan is well known for having very advanced technology, and most people would say robots are
among the country´s most amazing products. One of the most recent is the Asimo robot, which is
white, 1.3 metres high, and the same shape as a human – and therefore looks like a small astronaut.
It can walk like a human, dance, and recognize and answer 50 different questions!
