Name: Date: Sentence Combining Here's a list of useful sentence-combining techniques: 1. Glue Words Subordinating conjunctions: after, although, when, since, because, as, where, if, before, until, so that, though, unless, as soon as, etc. Prepositions: into, on, over, below, of, beside, under, above, in, through, beneath, around, etc. 2. WH Words: Relative pronouns: who, whom, whose, which, that (There are always exceptions in the English language. Sorry!) 3. ING Words: Gerunds: ING Words which acts like a noun, e. g., "Swimming is a good exercise." Present participles: ING Words which acts like an adjective, e.g., "The turtle chased the swimming boy." Exercise 1: Combine each of the following sentences in three different ways using Glue Words (subordinating conjunctions and prepositions), WH Words (relative pronouns), and ING Words (gerunds and present participles). Type your new sentences in the blank after each question. Example: Ginger Zigmon raises guinea pigs. She models high fashion clothing. 1. Ginger Zigmon, who raises guinea pigs, models high fashion clothing. 2. Besides modeling high fashion clothing, Ginger Zigmon raises guinea pigs. 3.
