EARTH’S EARLY HISTORY
PART 1: CONDITIONS ON EARLY EARTH
Use section 17-2 in textbook to answer analysis questions below (in complete sentences in your journal!)
1. Explain why it is likely that our current ideas about the early earth will undergo change
2. Based on our current understanding, when did the following occur:
(Note: write out dates as both a word AND using numbers!)
a. Formation of Earth
b. the Earth’s surface cooled enough to form solid rocks on the surface
c. the Earth’s surface cooled enough to allow water to remain in liquid form
3. Contrast the early atmosphere and the atmosphere of today
4. Explain what the results of Miller and Urey’s experiments suggest about the potential origin of organic (life)
compounds.
5. What evidence suggests that RNA might have arisen before DNA?
6. What process added oxygen to Earth’s atmosphere? About how long ago did this begin?
7. According to endosymbiotic theory, how did eukaryotic cells evolve? What evidence is this theory based on?
PART 2: EVOLUTION OF MULTICELLULAR LIFE
For each of the following time periods, use geologic time scale on page 421 to list the time frame and then use
section 17-3 to give a brief synopsis of life during that time:
- Precambrian
- Paleozoic
- Mesozoic
- Cenozoic
