Chapter 15:
Asteroid, meteorites and comets. What is the asteroid belt, how we believe it was formed
and where it is located? What are the size distribution of the asteroids. Compare the size
of the largest asteroid with the planet Pluto. What is the composition of a meteorite. What
is the structure of a comet? Where are comets coming from?
Chapter 16:
How do we use the atomic emission and absorption spectra to find the composition of a
star? How do we determine the rotation period of a star? How do we determine the
distance to a star using Stellar Parallax? What is an H-R diagram and what information
does it give us?
One of the Ca spectral lines coming form a distant star is red-shifted by 10 nm. This line
of Ca when emitted from a stationary source in our Lab is at 500 nm. Is the star moving
away of towards us and what is its speed?
Chapter 17:
Internal structure of our Sun and its chemical composition. What is the convection zone
on the Sun and what are the granules and supergranules? What is the temperature in the
Sun’s core? What is the photosphere, chromosphere and corona? What is their
temperature and what causes their color? What is the cause of sun-spots why are they
dark and why do they occur mostly in pairs and in a band around the sun’s equator?
What is the so-called differential rotation of the sun? What is the main cause of the sun’s
energy? What are the sun-flares and prominences and what causes them? What is the
solar wind?
Chapter 18:
Solar system formation. What is a nebula? What evidence do we have that stars form
within dark interstellar clouds? What triggers the collapse of interstellar clouds to form
stars? What is a protostar and how does it form? What stops a protostar from growing
even more? What are the various types of main sequence stars? What is the main source
of energy of a protostar and of a main-sequence star? How do the planets form in a solar
system? What types of materials do you expect to find near the sun and what types of
materials do you expect to find farther away from the sun within the solar system and
why?
Chapter 19:
How do stars evolve? Stellar evolution and H-R diagrams. In what ways are main
sequence stars alike and in what ways are they different? What causes the stellar
evolution? What happens in the core of a star? What factors determine the lifetime of a
star?
Chapter 20:
What happens to a star when it finishes the main sequence part of its evolution? How do
stars make heavy elements?
How do stars die? What factors determine the lifetime, the evolutionary path and the
death of a star? What is a White Dwarf? What is a Neutron Star? What is a supernova?
How are neutron stars and supernovae related? What is a Black Hole? How is a black
hole formed as a consequence of a collapsing star? What is the Schwarzschild radius of a
black hole?
A star of mass 10 times the solar mass became a black hole. What is its Schwarzschild
radius?
