1. Why do people of provincial towns always envy the dwellers of large cities?
2. Have you only amateur dramatics in your town?
I am keen on movies, that is why I am interested in everything that is connected with it.
First some words about history of cinematography. In 1895 the Lumieres brothers made their first three minute film
which was demonstrated to the public. It was almost a century ago. Nowadays cinema is probably the most popular
form of entertainment in the world.
I like seeing films very much. I go to the cinema almost every weekend. I have an excellent movie theatre in my
neighborhood. It is situated straight nearly my house. Most of all I like seeing adventures, fantastic, historical and
romantic films. When I was a child, I liked cartoons very much. I saw them everyday. My Dad didn’t like it. But I
think that everybody saw cartoons in childhood very often, didn’t they? Of course, yes.
In our country many foreign films are shown and I like seeing them very much. Lately I saw a film «Avatar» and I
enjoy it very much. In this film I saw brilliant acting of actors and actresses, fascinating scenery and costumes,
wonderful music, curious plot and surprising work of the producers. This film is really worth seeing.
My favorite actor is Brad Pitt. If you are keen on movies, you are sure to know this name, because he is probably
one of the brightest Hollywood stars. He certainly looks like a star: he is well-built and handsome, with friendly
eyes and a fascinating smile.
---------------------------------------------------------------The 20th century brought great changes into the theatre. Cinema, radio, television, video altered the course of the
major performing arts and created the new ones. But still there are hundreds of puppet theatres, conservatoires and
philharmonics, musical comedy theatres, drama theatres and opera houses where the audiences are excited at the
prospect of seeing a play and the actors are most encouraged by the warm reception. But before going to a theatre
you should book a ticket at a box-office.
The most expensive seats are in the stalls, boxes and dress-circle. The seats in the balcony, pit and the upper circle
are less expensive, they are cheap. Then at the entrance to the theatre the attendant tears your theatre ticket in half.
He gives you your half back so that you can find your seat by its number. Another attendant shows you to your seat
and sells a programme that will tell you which parts the actors are playing and how many acts there are in the play.
Then you take your seat and may enjoy the play.
I have always envied the dwellers of large cities. They have so many opportunities to enjoy themselves. Theatres,
cinemas, variety shows, circus, conservatoire, concert halls, etc. are at their desposal. In provincial towns like mine
is we have only amateur dramatics. That’s why I always take the smallest chance to go to a theatre when in a city.

-3Questions:
1. Why have you always envied the dwellers of large cities?
2. Have you only amateur dramatics in your town?
3. Which seats are the most expensive, less expensive, cheap?
I am fond of good books and good music, and when I have some time to spare, I like to go to the theatre or a
concert. There are more than a dozen very good orchestras in Britain and some of them are world famous.
Orchestras in Britain have no concert halls of their own, but play in halls rented from local authorities or private
companies. There are 2 big concert halls in London. The Old Royal Albert Hall and the New Royal Festival Hall,
which is one of the most modern concert halls in the world. Theatrical perfomances are given by theatre companies.
There are about 200 professional theatres in Britain. Like orchestras, the theatre companies usually play in rented
theatres, but there are several theatres which have their own homes. The center of the actrical life is London. London
is also the main center of opera and ballet. I am not particulaly fond of the cinema. Rather then take trouble of going
out to see a film, I would stay at home and watch television. I seemed to share this attitude with the most other
people in Britain. In Britain the choice of films is limited to young people. Films are placed in one of three
categories in Britain. «U» — suitable for everybody, «A» — more suitable for adults, «X» — suitable only for
adults. A person under 16 years of age may see an «A» filem only in company of an adult. Only person over 16
years of age may see «X» films. Those, who prefer to stay at home may spend their free time, watching TV,
listening to the radio. They have many TV and radio programs to choose from.
As for me, I am a great cinema-goer. I like the cinema tremendously. I see all the best films that are on. I prefer
features films, though I enjoy documentaries almost as much to say nothing of animated cartoons films, news-reels
or popular science films. I usually go to the cinema for the morning or day shows. If I want to go to an evening show
I book tickets beforehand. I like to come to hte cinema a couple of minutes before the movie starts. If there is a long
time to wait I can always look at the portraits of film stars hanging on the walls of the foyer, or listen to a little
concert that is usually given for the spectators. It is a good idea, that those who are late are not allowed to enter the
hall until the news-reel is over. I hate being disturbed when a film is on. If I like a movie very much I go to see it a
second time and besides I see many of the movies televised. I often read the paper «Film Week» to know which
films have been released and which ones are being shot. I know all the famous script writers, producers and
cameramen.
In England the cinema is usually called “the pictures”. In America the word “the movies” is often used. Cinemagoing is a favourite pastime in Britain. People go to the cinema once or twice a week. Cinema-going is more popular
in industrial towns in the North of England and Scotland than in the South. However, especially if it is cold and wet
outside, many people like to stay at home to watch TV.
Cinemas in England are usually large and more comfortable than the theatres. Often there is a restaurant, so that it is
possible to spend an afternoon and evening there (if you have enough money, of course). Behind the cine-ma screen
there is a stage, so that the building can be used for concerts and other performances.
British cinema-goers see mainly English and American films, though many of the foreign films are often shown in
London and in the South of the country.
In our country cinema-going is not so popular now as it was earlier. People prefer to stay at home and to watch TV
or video.
I like to watch films very much. I prefer thrillers, comedies and horror movies, but I do not like tragedies and
melodramas very much, and I hate soap operas, although they are becoming very popular in our country. My
favourite film is … with … starring. It is really wonderful from the beginning to the end. There are a lot of films
which are worth seeing, but this one is the best one to my mind.
