Warren Road (Academy) Handwriting Policy Updated May 2012 The Governors and staff of Warren Road Primary School fully recognise the responsibility they have to the safeguarding and protection of all pupils. All governors and staff, including volunteers, have a full and active part to play in protecting children and young people from harm. All staff and governors believe that our school should provide a caring, positive, safe and stimulating environment which promotes the social, physical and moral development of the individual pupil. Children will be taught to write cursively from Reception. Once children have mastered pre writing skills, they will be introduced to cursive writing. Children will also be taught to recognise each letter in its printed form. Each class teacher will teach the continuous cursive style, as recommended by the National Dyslexia Institute. Class teachers will each be given the school handwriting scheme, providing examples of each letter, how to teach it, and in which order to teach the alphabet. New members of staff will be made aware of this policy and training will be provided where necessary. Individual teachers will make decisions as to whether children are ready to write in pen. Children will use black ink. Teachers will make themselves aware of any children who are left handed. These children will be seated on the end of a table where they will not clash elbows with other children. Teachers will support and guide any children who experience any form of difficulty (both left and right handed children), and pencil grips will be allocated where teachers feel it necessary. Pupils may also be supported if they have other difficulties such as dyspraxia. Lena Pennacchia May 2012
