Romantic Elements and Rhetorical Devices
Romanticism Project
Name: Sarah Cho
Title of Literature Piece: The Civil Disobedience
Author of Piece: Henry David Thoreau
Remember to use four different elements.
Romantic Element
Looks backward on
the wisdom of the
past--distrusts
progress (intuition)
Places central
importance on the
emotions and the
individual (Inner
Experience)
Explanation
In the Civil Disobedience, Thoreau shows that the
government is used in a wrong way, and is created by men.
Since America was using slavery although tried to represent
freedom and equality, Thoreau believed that there was
disrust in the direction the American civilization is taking.
Also, he thought that America was loosing its republican
virtue.
In the Civil Disobedience, Thoreau places importance on the
individual because he believes that human are conscience
while the government are not. Also, he believes that
individual should react due to conscience, to stop the
government from being corrupt.
Remember to use two different rhetorical devices!
Rhetorical Device
Counterclaim
Explanation
People say that it could be better to vote or just stay quiet, but
Thoreau states that voting is just wishing, but not making any
changes. Also, staying quiet goes against the human’s
conscience to stand up for themselves. Thus, the
government is inherently corrupt with the society and that
there is no way to make changes unless it is his way: Civil
Disobedience.
Title of Art Piece: The Narrows, New York Bay
Author of Piece: Thomas Birch
Remember to use four different elements.
Romantic Element
(Innocence)Prefers
youthful innocence
to educated
sophistication
Explanation
In this artwork, Thomas Birch uses the cows to show the
innocence of humans when they are in nature. Animals are
innocent in society, because they are living under the natural
environment, and are peaceful and harmonious in their
natural environment.
Romantic Element
Finds beauty and
truth in exotic
locales, the
supernatural realm,
and the inner world
of the imagination
(Inspiration)
Explanation
In this artwork, the light is used in two ways. One is in the
background, and the other is used as a spotlight. The one in
the background shines on the river and ships, which is
industrialization. However, the nature side is dark because
society then believes that nature is wild. The spotlight is
shining on the cows and nature, which symbolizes God’s
existence in nature. This means that supernatural elements
exist in nature.
