Persephone
Throughout Greek mythology there are many different gods and goddesses. The
one we found most interesting is Persephone. Just about all of the gods and goddesses
have Roman names as well. Persephone’s Roman name was Preserpina.
Persephone was one of nine children. She was the daughter of Zeus and
Demeter. Persephone had five brothers and three sisters not including herself. Her
siblings were Apollo, god of prophecy, his twin sister Artemis, goddess of the moon,
Athena, goddess of arts and crafts and defensive war, Aphrodite, goddess of beauty
and sexual desire, Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, they determined the length of each
mortal’s life, Ares, god of war, Hephaestus, metal smith of the gods, and, Hermes,
guides travelers and leads shades into the underworld.
There’re myths behind many gods and goddesses. The myth behind Persephone
is said to be how we came to have seasons, giving us the cold harsh winters and the
beautiful warm springs. Hades, god of the underworld, was in love with Persephone, but
she was not in love with him. Hades did not impress her. One day, I guess you could
say Hades got tired of waiting around for Persephone to fall in love with her, so he
kidnapped her. Hades then took Persephone down to the underworld to live out the rest
of her life, to be his queen, and the queen of the underworld. After, be forced to live in
the underworld, Persephone came to love Hades. Although Persephone did end up
falling in love with Hades there was a problem. Persephone’s mother Demeter, was in
complete rage over the fact that her daughter was in love with Hades.
