Mental Disorders
Some people believe that a country should be judged based on how it treats its
citizens who are most in need of assistance. Individuals living with a mental disorder are
one sub-group of the population who may need additional services. Critics argue that the
United States does not deserve accolades for its handling of mental disorders. Some
advocates of the mentally ill find it appalling that mental health services are difficult to
obtain and often require significant financial resources, especially in a country with so
much wealth. In addition, callous remarks made by the general public towards
individuals with mental disorders further adds to the stigma felt by this population. The
American government does not appreciate being chided by critics; they claim to be doing
the best they can with the available resources. A compromise solution might be to
research a country with proven success implementing services and programs for the
mentally ill and to emulate their initiatives in the United States.
