Our anticipated role in the issues is: - It is anticipated that Iraq will take on a role of support behind the people of Palestine. At this point in time Iraq strongly opposes the presence and actions of the Jewish forces and wants for Palestine to be returned to the Islamic area it once was. My current role in the issue is: Believes Iraq should call on US for security help political reluctance to ask US troops for security support should be reconsidered Iraq should consider calling for more help from US forces Iraq needs to decide how the remaining US forces can best be used Our anticipated role in the issues is: - propose an “alliance” between the United States and Iran, which would lessen Iranian interference in Iraqi affairs, including the flow of fighters and weapons across the border something that has recently lessened but is still of concern to Iraqi and US officials - - is a trained economist who left Iraq in 1969 for exile in France attended high school at Baghdad College, an elite American Jesuit secondary school. Timeline 1920 - Iraq is placed under British mandate, forms Iraq monarchy 1932 - Iraq becomes an independent state. 1958 - The monarchy is overthrown in a military coup, Iraq is declared to be a republic 1963-1968- multiple military coups are led to oust presidents out of power. 1972 - A 15-year Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation is signed between Iraq and the Soviet Union. 1972 - Iraq nationalizes the Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC). 1979 16 July - President Al-Bakr resigns and is succeeded by Vice-President Saddam Hussein. 1980 - Iran shells Iraqi border towns (Iraq considers this as the start of the Iran/Iraq war). This conflict would last for 8 years and have approximately 1 million fatalities. 1981 - Israel attacks an Iraqi nuclear research centre at Tuwaythah near Baghdad. 1990 - Iraq invades Kuwait this leads to the Gulf War between Iraq and coalition forces including Britain, the United States and other nations. 1995 - Saddam Hussein wins a referendum allowing him to remain president for another seven years. 1998- the US and UK launch a bombing campaign, "Operation Desert Fox", to destroy Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programmes. 2002- suspends oil exports to protest against Israeli incursions into Palestinian territories. Despite calls, no other Arab countries follow suit. Exports resume after 30 days. 2002- US tells world leaders at a UN General Assembly session to confront the "grave and gathering danger" of Iraq - or stand aside as the US acts. 2003- (March 17) UK says the diplomatic process on Iraq has ended US President George W Bush gives Saddam Hussein and his sons 48 hours to leave Iraq or face war. 2003- (April 9) - US forces advance into central Baghdad.
