Great Depression Mark Scheme
1
i)
What is the message conveyed in Source A?
The message conveyed in Source A is that due to geographical and economic
incapabilities none of the Great Powers were able to intervene in the invasion of
Manchuria.
ii) According to Source B, what was the cause of financial struggle in Japan that led to the
invasion of Manchuria?
The cause of the financial struggle in Japan was due to;
 Industrial revolution based on exports to US
 US economy collapsed consequently so did theirs.
2) Compare and contrast the views expressed in Source D and E.
 Source D says there was no reduction in reparations while source E says there
was a reduction in the reparations.
 Both sources agree that, the Dawes Plan was successful in the withdrawal of
French Troops.
 Both sources agree that the Dawes Plan was successful in restoring the German
economy.
3) With reference to Source C and D, state the origin, purpose and the value and limitations of
these respective sources?
Source C
 The Star Newspaper, published in September 18 1921. Its purpose is to make a
negative comment on the League of Nation’s efforts to maintain peace during
German Hyperinflation.
 The value is that it is a primary source and offers a perspective from the time of
the events.
 This comic was published before the events took place and offers no statistics.
4) Using information from the sources and your own knowledge, state the significance of the
Great Depression to international peace.
 The Great Depression had a significant impact on International relations.
 The invasion of Manchuria was a direct result of the collapse of the US economy.
 As seen in source A, industrial revolution through exports created prosperity in
Japan until the collapse.
 As seen in Source B, Japan was a predominant power in East Asia and because
of economic restraints no Great Power had the means to aid Manchuria.
 In Source C, the cartoon is titled Treasure Hunt for Peace, implying that the
Dawes Plan was thought to be a legitimate measure to maintain peace during
German hyperinflation.
 In Source D and E, German was heavily dependant on the US economy. However
at the same time we can understand that the Dawes Plan, whilst ultimately
detrimental to International Peace relations, one can observe that the Dawes
Plan was also successful in ‘relaxing tensions’ between Germany and France.
