PART 2. Literary Responses to Imperialism
You will read and analyze these pieces of literature: a poem (“Defamation” by Rabindranath Tagore), a
eulogy of Cecil Rhodes (“The Burial” by Rudyard Kipling), and a fable (“A Response to Imperialism” by
Jomo Kenyatta). Each of these authors explains imperialism from his own personal perspective. Answer

Unit 8: Imperialism
Background:
Rabindranath Tagore was an Indian poet and philosopher who won the Nobel prize in literature in 1913.
He was a critic of imperialism and was in favor of Indian nationalism.
Rudyard Kipling was a popular British author who was born in India. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature
in 1907. He is controversial for being in favor of British imperialism and many find his writing to contain
prejudicial ideas.
Jomo Kenyatta served as the first Prime Minister of Kenya from 1963-64 and then President from 1964-1978.
He wrote several books on the history of Africa and the legacy of imperialism.
Tagore: “Defamation” (p.101 in your reader)
