UHS Immunization Expectations
Student Workers/Volunteers
Welcome to UHS! We are looking forward to working with you and helping you receive a wonderful educational
experience. By virtue of working or volunteering in our facility, you are considered to be health care personnel or
HCP. As a result, you have a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of our patients. One way to do this is to
be adequately immunized against infectious diseases so that YOU won’t spread these infections.
You are expected to provide UHS with written documentation from your primary care provider of immunity
or vaccination and complete TB testing, prior to beginning your service. The specific disease
immunity/vaccination criteria are listed below.
1. Measles/Mumps/Rubella:
 Either 2 doses of live MMR vaccine given after the first birthday and at least 28 days apart OR
 Laboratory confirmation of immunity to all 3 infections.
2. Varicella (Chickenpox):
 Either 2 doses of the Varicella vaccine OR
 Laboratory evidence of immunity or laboratory confirmed disease OR
 Diagnosis or verification of a history of varicella disease by your health-care provider OR
 Diagnosis or verification of a history of shingles by a health-care provider
3. Pertussis (Whooping Cough):
 A single dose of the Tdap vaccine (adolescent/adult booster dose of tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis)
4. Influenza (Flu):
 Annual flu vaccine – UHS has this vaccine and will make it available to you at no cost or you may
get it from your health care provider
5. Hepatitis B: (for those students working in areas with an increased risk of contact with body fluids)
 3-dose vaccine series
TB Screening: In addition to the above vaccines, you also need to have TB testing completed before starting.
If you are new to UHS, this means you will need to have 2 TB tests, spaced 1-3 weeks apart. You may either
have this done with your private health care provider and bring documentation OR have it done here at
UHS at no cost to you by scheduling an appointment with our nurses.
If you have any questions regarding this message, or any other infection prevention issues, please feel free to either
contact your UHS supervisor or me. For additional information, go to:
