The Muscular System Structures of the Muscular System • More that 600 muscles – found under the skin. • Tendons – A tendon is a tough band of connective tissue that usually connects muscle to bone and is capable of withstanding tension. DID YOU KNOW… It takes more muscles to frown than to smile? Three Types of Muscles The 3 types of muscle tissue are cardiac, smooth, and skeletal. 1. Cardiac muscle == makes up the heart; striated; involuntary control. make up internal organs, except the heart: involuntary control. 2. Smooth muscle 3. Skeletal muscle attached to the skeleton; striated; voluntary control. Skeletal muscle is found throughout the body. Cardiac muscle is ONLY in the heart. Smooth muscle is found within inner organs. Two Groups of Muscles • Voluntary Muscles – muscles that we can control. Example: skeletal muscles, arm, legs, facial muscles. • Involuntary Muscles – muscles that we cannot control. Example: heart, stomach, esophagus, intestines. Functions of the Muscular System 1. Stability and Posture 2. Motion 3. Heat Production 4. Circulation 5. Digestion
