First Grade Reading
Lesson 15
This week’s practice:
 Phonics: long /i/ spelled i_e
 Phonics: digraphs kn, wr, gn, mb (know, write, gnat, thumb)
 High frequency words: bird, both, eyes, fly, long, or, those, walk
 Grammar: Suffixes –er and -est
This week’s spelling Pattern:
On the spelling test your child will be asked to write the sound(s) we are studying, plus 2 dictation sentences that
contain words spelled this way and sight words we have been studying.
Rather than memorizing a specific list of words, focus on learning the spelling rule so that your child can spell any
Help your child become a problem solver when it comes to spelling by asking questions such as, “If you can spell
hand, how do you spell sand? That’s right, you just change the first letter because they rhyme!”
These types of words will be on the test (not necessarily these words):
bike
like
pine
dime
hide
side
slide
drive
while
fine
five
chime
Challenge Option:
Your child will be given the opportunity to write 4 words and 3 more dictation sentences that contain more
challenging words that follow the spelling pattern and harder “High-Frequency” words. This is optional for those
students who are interested in a challenge. Do not worry about studying these words unless the words above are
easy and automatic for your child.
Any of the following words may be on the challenge portion of the test:
prize
strike
riding
decide
beside
divide
biking
outside
Ultra Challenge Bonus Words!
lifetime
Valentine
snowdrift
Words, Words, Words
 Using index cards or paper cut in 2”x3” pieces, have your child write the words in bold
above or use the flashcards on the webpage and read each word. Have your child add
their word cards to their word box.
 Help your child arrange the cards so that the words are in alphabetical order. Then say
the alphabet together, and point to each card in turn as you name its first letter.
 Ask your child to make up sentences using the words on the cards.
Decodable Story
Lesson 15
Mike’s Bike
by Claire Coolidge
Mike’s new bike is red and white. Mike just got it. Mike can ride
it well. Mike rides his bike with pride.
Mike will ride his bike to see Nell. His dad will ride with him.
Nell will like Mike’s bike. Nell’s Bike is red and white, too.
Nell did like Mike’s bike.
“I like its white stripes. Mine has red stripes. Both bikes have
stripes,” Nell said.
Mike, Dad, and Nell take a ride.
“This bike path is fun. I like it,” said Mike.
“It’s nice to ride on. I like it too,” said Nell.
Mike, Dad, and Nell ride for five or six miles. It is a long ride.
“This is the end,” said Nell. “It is time to go back.”
They stop at Nell’s place.
“That was fun, Mike,” said Nell.
Mike had a big, wide grin on his face.
“Best time of my life!” said Mike.
Decodable Story 2
Lesson 15
The Nest
by Amy Long
The big bird has a name. His name is Pale Male. Pale
Male’s chest is white. Pale Male’s neck is white.
Pale Male has a nest. The nest is wide. It is a big, big
nest. Pale Male made it. It can take a long time to make
a big nest like this.
If you walk past it, look up. Pale Male’s nest is not just a
big pile of sticks and vines. It is a fine nest.
The nest had small eggs in it. It has small chicks in it
now. Dad and Mom find mice for them. Those chicks get
quite big, as big as Mom and Dad.
It is time to fly. Chicks grasp the nest at its side.
Chicks flap and flap and flap. Then they let go and glide.
Glide, flap, flap, glide! Both can fly!
The big chick can fly like Mom and Dad. The chick can
rise up and dip down. Rise and dive, Chick. Rise and glide,
Chick. Fly!

High-Frequency/ Sight Words
High-frequency words, or sight words, are words that students need to recognize automatically. They are
the most frequently used words in our language and/or do not fit standard spelling rules. Students need to be
able to say each word on this list within 3 seconds, without trying to sound it out. The test is given on the last day
of the week.
Test for “Animal Groups”
walk

or
long
fly
eyes

Sight words for next week’s
story, “Let’s Go to the Moon!”

In addition to playing memorization games, use the suggestions below to study
the meaning and usage of any of the new words your child doesn’t already
know:
 Ask your child to tell a story using all the words.
 Ask your child to tell something interesting about each word. For
example, “The word ‘around’ has the word ‘round’ in it. The word ‘before’
has the word ‘for’ in it. The word ‘carry’ has two letter r’s and they are
together.”
While you study next week’s new words, please continue to study any words from
this week that are not yet memorized.
