THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK
The Diary of Anne Frank contains many references to people, places, and events. Anne
uses her dairy to share and talk about the people, places and events during a traumatic
period of the world’s history. Researching some of these can help you better understand
what happen to a real girl who lived only fifteen short years. Research one of the topics
listed below. Be sure you refer to The Pingry Style Manual for documenting a research
paper.
I. Anne’s diary consists of events that take place within and outside the annex. She is
deeply affected by living in such confinement. We only know about her dreams and
hopes through the diary. We also learn about her adolescence and her longing to be
outside the attic house. Think about Anne’s adolescence having to be spent in a tiny attic
apartment hidden away. Describe Anne’s room, the controlled behavior, and the scary
times of being in hiding. How did the other occupants of the Secret Annex feel about
Anne?
II. During World War II there was no television as we have now, and people got much of
their news and entertainment from radio. Radio was especially important for the people in
the Secret Annex, because except for the news brought to them by the people who were
sheltering them, they were isolated; yet, their lives depended on how the war progressed.
Research a certain incident during the war such as the day the Germans surrendered and
describe who, what, where, when, and how or why of the event.
III. Judaism: Anne Frank’s Religion
When Hitler became the dictator of Germany, anti-Semitism and hatred of anything
Jewish became official government policy. This was accompanied largely by the use of
propaganda, in which the government systematically manipulated the beliefs, attitudes,
and actions of the German people. Research how the Nazi government was able to
promote its policy of prejudice and discrimination. Be sure you explain the different
forms of propaganda he used to brainwash and persuade others to his own beliefs.
