Energy Pyramids
In an ecosystem, only 10 percent of the energy available at one trophic
level is transferred to the next level above it. This relationship can be
shown in an energy pyramid. You can also show the change in energy
by using grids of 100 boxes.
Color the “Producers” section of the pyramid green. Color the “Firstlevel consumers” section brown. Color the “Second-level consumers”
section blue. Color the “Third-level consumers” section purple.
0.1% Third-level consumers
1% Second-level consumers
10% First-level consumers
100% Producers
Label each grid with the trophic level it represents. The first
one has been done for you.

The Water Cycle
The water cycle is the movement of water between the ocean, the
atmosphere, land, and living things.
The processes involved in the water cycle are labeled with letters A-G in the
diagram. Use the words below to identify each process and write it on the
lines provided.
condensation
evaporation
precipitation

The Carbon Cycle
The carbon cycle describes how carbon moves between the
atmosphere, the ocean, land, and living things.
Color the arrows that show carbon moving into the atmosphere blue. Color
the arrows that show carbon moving out of the atmosphere yellow.
Use the diagram to answer the questions. Circle the correct answer.
1. Which process releases carbon into the atmosphere?
photosynthesis
respiration
2. Which process removes carbon from the land?
human activity
deposition

The Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen cycles through the biosphere in several forms. Nitrogen gas is a
major component of the atmosphere, but only certain types of bacteria can
use it directly. These bacteria convert the nitrogen into forms that producers
can use.
Color the arrows that show nitrogen moving in a form that plants cannot
use blue. Color the arrows that show nitrogen moving in a form that is
useful to producers red.
Use the diagram to answer the question.
1. By which process do certain bacteria convert nitrogen gas
into ammonia (NH3)?
2. Look at the diagram. Which forms of nitrogen are useful
to producers?
