Circulation and Immune system Review I. Circulatory system A. Blood 1. Function: transport materials (oxygen, carbon dioxide, wastes), maintain homeostasis 2. Parts of the Blood a) Red Blood Cells b) White Blood Cells c) Platelets d) Lymph B. Blood types chart – know what types each can receive and donate to and what antigens are found on the blood cells. C. Blood Vessels 1. Arteries – thick muscular walls, carry blood AWAY from the heart 2. Veins – have valves to avoid backward flow and fight forces of gravity, carry blood TO the heart 3. Capillaries – thinnest vessels, exchange of gases takes place here D. Heart 1. Two upper chambers are atria (right atrium, left atrium) 2. Two lower chambers are ventricles (right ventricle, left ventricle) 3. Septum – separates the heart down the middle to prevent oxygenated blood from mixing with deoxygenated blood 4. Pacemaker – part of the heart that controls the heartbeat rhythm E. Path of Blood 1. Pulmonary circulation – blood flow between the lungs and the heart 2. Systemic circulation – blood flow between the heart and rest of the body II. Immune System A. Vaccines – contain weakened or dead pathogens; cause the body to recognize the invader and produce antibodies to fight it. Later if the invader (full strength) gets in the body, the WBC’s will already have a defense against it and will destroy it without the person becoming sick. B. Antibodies C. Antigens D. Pathogens E. Organ transplants
