Activity—How Long is the Digestive System?
Objective:
Students will recognize what the length of the digestive system is and how the
alimentary canal is divided into parts.
Materials:
Green yarn
cut 25 cm
Esophagus
Orange yarn
cut 20 cm
Stomach
Red yarn
cut 700 cm (7 m)
Small Intestine
Blue yarn
cut 150 cm
Large Intestine
Total—895 cm
Directions: Label the Activity at the top ALIMENTARY CANAL
You will be using a different color of yarn to represent each section of the alimentary
canal. Cut pieces of yarn according to the above measurements. After cutting the
yarn, tie the pieces together. Tape to paper using any type of design. Label each
section of yarn with the appropriate name of the section of the alimentary canal that is
represented. INCLUDE THE THREE SECTIONS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE IN
ORDER AND THE SECTIONS OF THE LARGE INTESTINE FROM CECUM TO
ANUS.
After completing your model, review each section with your table partner and discuss
what happens in each section.

1. What action takes place in the esophagus to move food down?
2. What does the bolus change to when it goes into the stomach and what is the
name of the action that takes place there?
3. What are the three sections of the small intestine?
4. What is the large intestine sometimes called?
