Scientific Method Skills Check Name: _______________ Period: ____________ In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming was studying Staphylococcus bacteria growing in culture dishes. He noticed that a mold, Penicillium, was growing in some of the dishes. A clear area existed around the mold where all the bacteria had died. In the culture dishes without the mold, no clear areas were present. Fleming thought that the mold must be producing a chemical that killed the bacteria. He decided to isolate this substance and test it to see if it would kill bacteria. Fleming transferred the mold to a nutrient broth solution that contained all the materials the mold needed to grow. After the mold grew, he removed it from the nutrient broth and then added it to a culture of bacteria. All the bacteria died. He also added the nutrient broth solution, without any mold to a culture of bacteria. There was no change in the bacteria. Turn the page over to answer the questions! Observation D. Conclusion E Hypothesis Match the correct step of the scientific method (A_E) with the statement about Fleming’s Study. 1. _____ After multiple tests, Fleming confirmed that Penicillium kills the bacterial Staphylococcus 2. _____ Fleming noticed a clear area existed in the dishes where both the Staphylococcus and Penicillium were growing 3. _____ Fleming performed an experiment in which he added the mold to one culture of bacteria, and did NOT add the mold to a second culture of bacteria 4. _____ Fleming wondered why there was a clear area in the culture dish. F. Control Group G. Independent Variable H.
