WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH
during this season of Pentecost when we celebrate the presence of the Spirit in
our lives and recommit ourselves to the discipleship of Jesus Christ and our
hunger for justice and peace.
WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE LORD’S TABLE to receive
God’s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ.
Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel
or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread.
Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the
bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the
chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice. An acolyte will
pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return
to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone
has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable
to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the pastor. Children who
commune at their home congregation are welcome to receive the elements. Please hold out
your hand to let the minister know that you wish to receive communion. Parents who desire that
their children not receive communion may bring them forward for a blessing.
TODAY WE WELCOME PASTOR TIM WOLBRECHT to ULC as our Interim Pastor.
Tim lives in Redmond and has been an interim pastor in the NW WA Synod for several years.
Be sure to greet him after the service and introduce yourself.
PLEASE INDICATE YOUR ATTENDANCE at worship today and your participation in
Holy Communion by completing the enclosed Worship Registration form and placing it in the
offering plate. Please join us for fellowship and refreshments in the lounge after the service.
THERE ARE CHILDREN’S BAG with bulletins and books available in the lounge and the
narthex. They are hanging on the wall.
CHILD CARE is available in the Nursery for children of any age. Ask the usher for
directions.
OUR PRAYERS are for all who suffer from violence, for our homebound, and for all those in
need of healing in body or spirit.

Welcome & Announcements
Service of Confession and Absolution
Confession:
P: Although Jesus has presented us holy and blameless in the sight of God in our baptism,
we daily sin much and fall short of the glory of God. Therefore, we take this moment to
confess our sins and seek the reconciliation that Jesus has made possible through the
forgiveness of sins.
(Silent Confession)
P: God of all fullness and salvation,
All: We confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by
what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with
our entire being. We have not loved our neighbors as you desire of us. As much as
we are loved by you, we often estrange ourselves from you and go our own way in
pursuing the things of our flesh. We often conform to the ways of this world rather
than setting ourselves apart from the ways of the world in order to do your will. We
are not blameless when it comes to the deeds that we do that are displeasing to you.
Forgive us, and restore us to the state of being holy and blameless in your sight.
Absolution
P: We rejoice because God in Christ has forgiven all of our sins and cleansed us from all
unrighteousness. Therefore, we are renewed in our resolve to continue steadfast in the
faith and remain faithful in all that we are called to be and do in Jesus’ name.
C: Amen.

Prayer of the Day
A: Let us pray together:
C: Gracious God, you have made known to us the fullness of your love through the
testimony and witness of Jesus Christ. Grant to us your Spirit so that we may know
how best to respond to your love in the way that we relate with and treat other
people. As we grow in our faith, help us to be more faithful in our willingness to be
reconciled with those who do us wrong so that the good news of your realm will
come to fruition. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

First Lesson
Genesis 18:1-10a
God appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in
the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them,
he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, "My
lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and
wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may
refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant."
So they said, "Do as you have said." And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said,
"Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes." Abraham
ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to
prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before
them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. They said to him, "Where is your
wife Sarah?" And he said, "There, in the tent." Then one said, "I will surely return to you in
due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son."
L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word.
C: Thanks be to God.

Second Lesson
Colossians 1:15-28
Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things
in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He
himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Christ is the head of the
body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to
6
have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and
through him God was pleased to reconcile all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by
making peace through the blood of his cross. And you who were once estranged and hostile
in mind, doing evil deeds, Christ has now reconciled in his fleshly body through death, so as
to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him— provided that you
continue securely established and steadfast in the faith, without shifting from the hope
promised by the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under
heaven. I, Paul, became a servant of this gospel.
I am now rejoicing in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am completing what
is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church. I became its
servant according to God's commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of
God fully known, the mystery that has been hidden throughout the ages and generations but
has now been revealed to God’s saints. To them God chose to make known how great
among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the
hope of glory. It is Christ whom we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone in
all wisdom, so that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word.
C: Thanks be to God.

Gospel
Luke 10:38-42
P: The Gospel according to Luke, tenth chapter:
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named
Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's
feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she
came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work
by myself? Tell her then to help me." But Jesus answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are
7
worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the
better part, which will not be taken away from her."

Offertory Hymn
Offertory Prayer
A: Let us pray together:
C: Creator God, we give you thanks for providing us with what we need to be sustained
in this life. In gratitude, we offer to you these fruits of our labor for the ministries of
this congregation, the health of our community, and the hope of our nation. Bless
this bread and fruit of the vine that all who partake in this holy meal will be blessed
with the faith and courage to follow in the way of Jesus, in whose name we pray.
Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving
P: It is indeed right and salutary . . . . and join their unending hymn:
11
Eucharistic Prayer
P: God of our salvation, you are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you
created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the
nations. Blessed are you for Jesus, your Beloved Child, who is your light, shining in the
darkness of our lives and revealing to us your grace and truth.
In the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it
to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the
forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, Jesus’ preaching and healing, his dying and rising, and his
promise to come again, we await that day when all the universe will rejoice in your holy
and life-giving light.
By your Spirit, bless us and this meal, that refreshed with this hospitable food, we may be
a light in the world, revealing the brilliant love and peace of Jesus, our Christ, through
whom all glory and honor is yours, both now and forever.
C: Amen.
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as
we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us
from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.

THE SPECIAL OFFERING FOR JULY IS MENTAL HEALTH CHAPLAINCY.
Founded in 1987 by Rev. Craig Rennebohm, the Chaplaincy’s mission is “Outreach to our
neighbors on the streets who struggle with a major mental illness, trauma and abuse, and
chemical dependency.” The Chaplaincy provides spiritual care on the street and in hospitals,
and conducts companionship training for chaplains, health workers, clergy and laity, as well and
14
many other services. If you would like to contribute to Mental Health Chaplaincy, you may do
so by using a special offering envelope in the pew, making your check out to ULC, earmarking
it for MHC, and putting your gift in the offering plate, or bringing it to the church office. Thank
you for your generous offering.
THE ULC SUMMER PICNIC IS TODAY after worship at Ravenna Park. Burgers and hot
dogs will be provided and folks are invited to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to share. There
are maps to the site in the lounge that you can pick upon your way out. See you there!!
ON THURSDAY, JULY 28, PARENTS are invited to drop their kids off at the church
(childcare will be provided) and join together for a night out on the town. We will provide
dinner and screen a movie here at the church for the kids, and parents can return to pick them up
at the end of the night. Please sign up on the Worship Registration form, or contact Sam
Rennebohm ([email protected]) for more information.
THE ULC SUMMER CHOIR will be singing on Sunday, July 31. Everyone is invited to
participate. There is no long term commitment, just a chance to sing with the choir for one
Sunday. We will meet that morning at 8:45 a.m. to rehearse an easily-learned choir piece.
Come join us!
THE ULC FAMILY CAMPING TRIP WILL BE AUGUST 5-7. This year we will be
heading to Mossyrock Park, a little ways south of Olympia, and have reserved a large group
site. Folks who want to brave the Friday traffic are welcome to head out on August 5, and the
rest are welcome to join on August 6. We will have some group games, and activities, and an
informal worship time on Sunday morning. If you are interested, please sign up on the Worship
Registration form.
OUR CHURCH ADMINISTRATOR, Mari Mitchell-Putnam, will be on vacation next week.
She will be with her home church community at a camp on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene in
Idaho. She will be back on Monday, July 25. That week she will work limited hours so she can
spend time with family who will be visiting from Wisconsin.
ATTENDANCE was 110 last Sunday.
