Page 1 of 3 Instructions for Students You are a Genetics Counselor who must inform a client that their child has been diagnosed with a genetic disorder. You must inform the parents about how the genetic disorder was diagnosed, the genetic disorder’s characteristics, and the latest treatment options available. You will use a visual display to present the information to your client. Standard: S7L3a – Genetics and Heredity Students may choose from the following suggested topics or they may choose their own… Achondroplasia Down syndrome Polydactyly Fragile X syndrome Scoliosis Sickle Cell Disease Cystic Fibrosis Hemophilia Colorblindness Touretts Klinefelter syndrome Tay Sachs Disease PKU Huntington Disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Project Requirements Poster board should be standard size 20 inches x 28 inches and may be any color Please be NEAT, colorful, and use poster space wisely. All of the information you present orally must be on the visual display! BIBLIOGRAPHY is required and any PICTURES USED MUST BE CITED. Here are the categories… A. Detecting Genetic Disorders must include: 1. How the procedure for detecting works. 2. Who is recommended to use the procedure and why? 3. How the information is applied from the test results (either normal or abnormal). B. Genetic Disorder must include: 1. Genetics of the disorder (how it is passed from parent to the child, which chromosome the disorder is located on, is it dominant or recessive, is it sex linked, etc.) 2. Symptoms of the disorder- what is different about the individual that has this disorder. 3. At least 2 visuals- may be hand drawn, from computer, from a pamphlet or brochure, etc., and each must be explained. 4. Cures? Medical help (medicine, therapy, etc). C. Genetic Technology must include: 1. How is the procedure done? 2. Benefits of the procedure. 3. Problems or concerns associated with the procedure 4. At least two visuals a. Hand drawn, from the computer, from a pamphlet or brochure, etc. b. Must be clearly explained PLAGARISM is unacceptable!! Do not copy and paste information from the internet onto your poster. Put the information into your own words. Remember you must cite all references for information and pictures in your BIBLIOGRAPHY! The student meets the standard by explaining the role of genes and chromosomes in the process of inheriting a specific trait with accuracy. The student shows limited progress toward the standard by explaining the role of genes and chromosomes in the process of inheriting a specific trait with partial accuracy. The student shows minimal progress toward the standard by not or incorrectly explaining the role of genes and chromosomes in the process of inheriting a specific trait with partial accuracy. The student did not submit a poster for assessment that explains the role of genes and chromosomes in the process of inheriting a specific trait. Full, detailed, and complete explanation of the procedure is present. Full, detailed, and complete explanation of who is recommended for the procedure is present with a full, detailed explanation of why. Full, detailed, and complete explanation of results from the test is present for both normal and abnormal General summary of the procedure is present. Identified procedure, but there is no explanation present. Who is recommended for the procedure is present, but no explanation of why. No poster submitted for assessment. General summary of who is recommended for the procedure is present with a general explanation of why. Partial explanation of the procedure is present. Partial explanation of who is recommended for the procedure is present, with a partial explanation of why. General summary of results is present for both normal and abnormal test results Only one explanation from results is present; either normal or abnormal (not both) Only the results (normal or abnormal) are listed with no explanation No poster submitted for assessment. All four responses to the questions about the genetics of the disorder are included and correct… 1. Parent to offspring 2. Chromosome number 3. Dominant or recessive 4. Sex-linked One of your responses to the questions about the genetics of the disorder is either missing and/or incorrect (circled below)… 1. Parent to offspring 2. Chromosome number 3. Dominant or recessive 4. Sex-linked Two of your responses to the questions about the genetics of the disorder are either missing and/or incorrect (circled below)… 1. Parent to offspring 2. Chromosome number 3. Dominant or recessive 4. Sex-linked No poster submitted for assessment. Symptoms are listed, explained in detail, and compared to a child of normalcy at all stages of the disorder. More than two relevant visuals are included with detailed captions explaining each. Information given on cures not only focuses on medical help and therapies, but it specifically identifies medications by name, the most sought after therapies, and locations offering the best help/therapies. Symptoms of the disorder are listed, explained in detail, and compared to a child of normalcy. At least two relevant visuals are included with a detailed caption explaining each. Information given about cures is clear, detailed, and focuses on medical help and therapies. Symptoms of the disorder are listed and explained, but are not compared to a child of normalcy. At least two relevant visuals are included, but no detailed captions explaining the visuals. Cures that focus on medical help and therapy are identified, but they are not explained in detail. Three of your responses to the questions about the genetics of the disorder are either missing and/or incorrect (circled below)… 1. Parent to offspring 2. Chromosome number 3. Dominant or recessive 4. Sex-linked Symptoms of the disorder are listed, but are not explained or compared to a child with normalcy. Only one visual and one caption are present.
