World War I Vocabulary
1. Allies - The side of WWI that consisted of: Great Britain, France, Russia, and more. The US
eventually joined this side. The Allies defeated the Central Powers and won the war.
2. Central Powers - The side of WWI that consisted of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the
Ottoman Empire. The Central Powers lost to the Allies.
3. Lusitania - British passenger liner that was sunk by German submarine killing 1,198
people; angered many Americans and changed many minds about getting involved in WWI
4. Treaty of Versailles - This is the agreement that gave Germany consequences for WWI.
Germany had to pay reparations, lost land, and could have no military. The treaty angered
German people.
5. Babe Ruth - Famous baseball player in the 1920s, set many records, won the World
Series 4 times
6. Louis Armstrong - He was a famous Jazz singer and trumpeter during the Jazz Age.
7. Langston Hughes - He was an African American writer who was one of the leaders of the
Harlem Renaissance.
8. Henry Ford - He came up with a new way to mass-produce cars, the assembly line. This
made cars cheaper & more people could buy them.
9. Charles Lindbergh - He was the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in an
airplane.
10. Nationalism – is the belief that your country deserves more success than others.
11. Militarism – is the building of a strong military to frighten or defeat other countries
12. Alliance – is an agreement nations make to support and defend each other.
13. Trench warfare - is when soldiers crouched down in the ditches for protection and fired
their weapons from there.
14. Rations – When the government set limits on the amount of some goods civilians could
have, such as meat.
15. Propaganda – is information that is used to shape people’s thinking.
16. Armistice – is an agreement to stop fighting.
17. Isolationism – Is when a country tries to stay out of world events.
18. Woodrow Wilson – President of the United States during World War 1
19. Zimmerman Note – a note intercepted by the United States that was sent by the
Germans to the Mexicans promising to help reclaim land in the United States if they
promised to join the Central Powers.
20. Roaring Twenties –the time after World War I where people were spending more
money and enjoying life more.
21. Mass Production – the manufacturing of a product in large numbers and at a low cost,
utilizing specialized equipment and a division of labor.
22. Assembly Line – when parts of a product are identical to the order in which the parts
are assembled.
23. Harlem Renaissance –an era of expression by African American artists, writers, and
musicians.
24. Scat – jazz singing with nonsense syllables
25. Model T – The first car to be mass-produced
26. Radio – allowed news to be more widespread, families gathered around to listen to
news, music, and sports.
27. Franz Ferdinand – The archduke of Austria who was assassinated by Serbian
nationalist.
