Mini Venezuela (Mini V) Hampshire’s Mini V project is based on The Venezuelan model ‘El Sistema’ where music has been used as a vehicle for social change for many years. Hampshire’s version is a unique combination of elements which exist in other HMS work, but blends these features in a particular way so that children learn the violin, viola, cello and double bass together as part of a team, or ensemble. A string orchestra is therefore created from the start, and children enjoy the social and musical participation of learning in a large group. One school acts as host for the local area and children from surrounding schools take part in the weekly sessions after school. Two HMS teachers lead the upper and lower strings learning and aim to make links with the local HMS ensemble in the area for further development and enjoyment. The average group size for these projects is 30 children.
