Reminders:
 Start learning the map—we will have the map quiz the Friday after we get back from
Thanksgiving Break, 12/3!!
 The test on the ancient Middle East: Southwest Asia and Egypt will be Friday, 12/10.
 Don’t forget to review vocabulary—remember vocabulary quizzes are not announced!
Monday 11/15-Tuesday 11/16: Southwest Asia & North Africa—map work
Reading:
 Read the handout received in class on Friday on the physical geography of the Middle East:
Southwest Asia and North Africa
Wednesday 11/17: Essential Question for Discussion: How did geography impact the development of
civilization in Mesopotamia?
Reading:
 Chapter 1.3 pages 29 and 30 (stop at “Sumerians Create City-States)
 Take “G” notes focusing on the essential question above
Thursday 11/18: Essential Question for Discussion: How did the Sumerians contribute to the growth of
civilization in Mesopotamia?
Reading:
 Chapter 1.3 pages 19-23 (review this) and pages 30 (start at Sumerians Create City-States) and
read to page 32 (stop at “The First Empire Builders”)
 Take SPRITE (set #1) notes on the SUMERIANS.
o Directions for taking excellent SPRITE notes: Once you’ve read, REVIEW your notes
and determine which SPRITE questions you can answer. Develop a general statement
answering each of those questions. Then use the details from the reading as evidence to
support your general statement. This is how you should do your SPRITE notes EVERY
TIME you read. It will take you more time to complete the homework assignment, but
really THINKING about what you read will aid in retention and understanding!!
Friday 11/19: Essential Questions for Discussion: What is an Empire and who built the first Empire? and
What important idea did Hammurabi’s Babylon contribute to civilization?
Reading:
 Chapter 1. 3 pages 32-34 (start with “The First Empire Builders”) and read to the end of the
section. Make sure you read the primary source on p. 33.
 Use the new info in this reading to answer any of the SPRITE questions you can about each new
group of people—Akkadians and Babylonians. There won’t be much—mostly “P” for both—but
what is there is important!

 Don’t forget to review vocabulary. Remember learning the vocabulary is not just memorizing a
definition that you may or may not understand—it is having a deep understanding of the word
and how it relates to and impacts the civilizations we are studying AND the other words on the
list.
 Continue reviewing the map—we will have the map quiz this Friday, 12/3!!

Wednesday 12/1: Essential Questions for Discussion: What were the contributions to civilization of New
Kingdom Egypt?
Reading:
 In your text Chapter 4.1 read pages 89-92 (stop at “The Kushites Conquer the Nile Region”)
 Also read the handout received in class on Tuesday
 Take a new set (#3) of SPRITE notes on the NEW KINGDOM using both sources.
Thursday 12/2: Essential Questions for Discussion: What important ideas did the Phoenicians contribute
to civilization?
Reading:
 In your textbook Chapter 3.3 read pages 73-76 (start at the “Phoenicians Spread Trade and
Civilization” and read to the end of the section)
 Take a new set (#4) of G + SPRITE notes on the PHOENICIANS

Judaism?
Reading:
 Handout you received in class on Friday (pages 293-305 about Judaism most of this will be
“religion”)
 In the textbook Chapter 3.4 read pages 77-82
 Take thorough SPRITE notes (set #5) on the HEBREWS from your World History textbook!
 You should COMBINE notes from the text with notes from the handout.
Tuesday 12/7: Essential Questions for Discussion: What were the important contributions to civilization
of the Assyrian Empire? We will also discuss the concept of empire and the Conrad-Demarest Model of
Empires
Reading:
 First read about “The Hittite Empire” Chapter 3.1 pages 62-63 (you may stop at “Ayrans Transform
India”)
o What was the most important contribution of the Hittites—(it is in the area of technology)?
 In the textbook read Chapter 4.2 pages 95-98
 Handout received in class on Monday
 Take a new set (#6) of SPRITE notes on the ASSYRIANS: COMBINE the information from the
text and the handout
Wednesday 12/8-Thursday 12/9: Essential Questions for Discussion: What were the contributions to
civilization of the Persian Empire?
Reading for Wednesday:
 In the textbook pages 99-103
 Handout you received in class on Tuesday
 Take a new set (#7) of SPRITE notes on the PERSIANS using BOTH sources—also examine the
Conrad-Demarest Model as it relates to the Persian Empire.
Friday 12/10: UNIT TEST—Early Civilizations of the Middle East: Southeast Asia and North Africa
Monday 12/13: Atlas day—study for your exam.
Tuesday 12/14: Atlas work day—YOUR ATLAS IS DUE THE DAY OF YOUR FINAL—finish it up
now!
