Hawthorne Rd., Suite 308 Winston-Salem, NC 27103 Phone: (336) 448-2427 ENDOSCOPY OF THE STOMACH AND UPPER INTESTINE A SUMMARY AND PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR A PROCEDURE Fiberoptic endoscopy of the stomach and upper intestine (EGD) is used for the diagnosis of esophagitis, ulcer disease and other problems of the esophagus and upper intestine. This procedure provides a more accurate examination than x-ray as to the presence or absence of an ulcer or other findings, and allows small tissue samples (biopsies) to be taken from the lining of the intestine if necessary. Endoscopy requires you to swallow a thin flexible tube so the physician can examine your esophagus and your stomach. If the pieces of tissue are removed they will be examined microscopically. MORNING APPOINTMENTS: NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE THE PROCEDURE. You should take your blood pressure medications with no more than 4 oz. of water prior to your appointment, leaving at least 2 hours between medicine administration and your appointment time. Oral inhalers and nebulizers should be used, as regularly taken prior to arrival. Do not take oral diabetic medications the morning of the procedure. AFTERNOON APPOINTMENTS: Endoscopies to be done after 12 o’clock noon may have a clear liquid breakfast before 8:00 a.m. DO NOT drink any liquids within 4 hours of your scheduled appointment time. LIQUID DIET: Liquid diet consists of NO SOLID FOODS. Soups, broth from any meat or vegetable (no gravy with flour), beef and chicken bouillon cubes, coffee, tea, cokes, fruit juices (all except juices with pulp), Gatorade, and water. You may have Jello and Popsicles, but please avoid red food coloring. No dairy Products. TRANSPORTATION: Due to sedation that you will be given, you MUST have someone to drive you to and from your appointment. All drivers are required to sign in with the patient and must remain until the patient is discharged. If you do not have a driver, your procedure will not be done. NOTE: you may not drive or operate machinery for at least 8 hours after your procedure. (Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home.
