ENDOSCOPY OF THE STOMACH AND UPPER INTESTINE
A SUMMARY AND PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR A PROCEDURE
Fiberoptic endoscopy of the stomach and upper intestine (EGD) is used for the diagnosis of esophagitis, ulcer
disease and other problems of the esophagus and upper intestine. This procedure provides a more accurate
examination than x-ray as to the presence or absence of an ulcer or other findings, and allows small tissue samples
(biopsies) to be taken from the lining of the intestine if necessary. Endoscopy requires you to swallow a thin
flexible tube so the physician can examine your esophagus and your stomach. If the pieces of tissue are removed
they will be examined microscopically.
MORNING APPOINTMENTS:

THE NIGHT BEFORE THE PROCEDURE.
You should take your blood pressure medications with no more than 4 oz. of water prior to your appointment,

procedure.
