This course will provide a foundation for engineering-major students who are interested in cell-related workings, such as cellular engineering and tissue engineering. Lecture topics will start from fundamentals of cellular components to cell cycle regulation, the cytoskeleton and cell motility, cellular membrane systems, and the interaction of cells with each other and the environment. Required Text Book Essential Cell Biology 2nd Ed., by Alberts and others. Published in 2004 by Garland Science. Course introduction Chapter 1: Introduction to Cells Chapter 2: Chemical Components of Cells Chapter 3: Energy, Catalysis, and Biosynthesis Chapter 4: Protein Structure and Function Chapters 5 & 8: DNA and Control of Gene Expression Chapter 11: Membrane Structure Chapter 12: Membrane Transport Midterm Exam Chapter 15: Intracellular Compartments and Transport Chapter 16: Cell Communication Chapter 17: Cytoskeleton Chapter 18: Cell-Cycle Control and Cell Death Chapter 21 (i): Tissues Chapter 21 (ii): Cancer Chapter 10: Manipulating Genes and Cells Final Exam Term Paper This exercise is for you to gain experience in doing literature search on either a particular disease. You can choose one of the four following topics to write about: 1. Juvenile, or type I, diabetes 2. Adult onset, or type II, diabetes 3. Cystic Fibrosis 4. Hepatocellular carcinoma Credits will be given based upon: 1) answering the topic properly 2) citing 2 non-website references You can use either English or Chinese to write the term paper. The term paper should be between 2-3 pages long (no longer than 3 and no shorter than 2), using 12pt font and double spaced lines. Please include the two references you choose to use at the end of the paper. Guidelines for diabetes, cystic fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma: These three topics are types of diseases that afflict millions of people. For the paper, make sure to include what causes the problem, what can be done for people with this disease, and what you have learned from the research you have done. Grading: Midterm Exam (40%), Final Exam (45%), Term Paper + Participation of Discussion + Attendance (15%) Make-Up Exam: If you miss an exam for medical reasons, you will need a description from a doctor in order to take a make-up. Exams missed for personal reasons will be judged based upon situations. Anyone unable to take an exam must make every effort to contact me before the test through phone or e-mail to be considered for a make-up. Office hours: Wednesday, 2:00-3:30 PM (Chemical Eng. Building, Rm 508), and by e-mail appointment
