Assignment : Anatomy and Physiology
Date set:
September 2009
Completion Date: December 2009
Task One – P1, P2, M1, D1
Structure and Function
This task is concerned with investigating the structure and function of body systems such as the
cardiovascular and respiratory system.
You need to show that you understand that the human body is organised from the basic level of cells into
tissues that are combined to form organs that are then organised into body systems. You could do this by
taking one body system and showing how it is organised from the cellular level upwards using an annotated
flow chart that contains definitions of a cell, a tissue, an organ and a system.
1. Identify the position and functions of the following organs of the human body:
Heart
Lungs
Brain
Eye
Ear
Stomach
Pancreas
Intestines
Liver
Kidneys
Bladder
Ovaries/Testes
Uterus
(P1)
(P2) Describe the structure and function of 2 major body systems taken from the following list:
Cardiovascular
Nervous
Digestive
Reproductive
Respiratory
Endocrine
Excretory
Musculoskeletal
(M1) To achieve M1 you will need to explain the structure of both body systems in relation to their
functions: e.g. respiratory system = discuss how the surfaces of the air sacs or alveoli, are structured in
order to allow the exchange of gases to occur effectively.
(D1) To achieve D1 you will need to explain how two systems of the body interrelate to perform a named
function.

Task 2
P3, M2, D2 – Routine Measurements
This task is concerned with showing understanding of what routine measurements and observations could
be taken on the 2 body systems that you have investigated in task one and how these measurements and
observations could be used to demonstrate that these systems were not working properly.
1. (P3) Describe three routine measurements and observations that could be taken to monitor the
functioning of both investigated body systems.
Cardio-vascular: ECG, pulse rate, blood pressure monitoring.
Respiratory: Peak flow, Xray, Spirometry
2. To achieve M2 you need to go on to explain how these routine measurements and observations could
indicate malfunction of the body systems investigated. For this evidence you will need to explain what
the normal ranges are for these measurements and how values found outside these ranges could lead
to indications of problems in both the systems investigated.
3. To achieve D2 you will need to explain how routine measurements and observations can be used as
indicators of Health and Ill Health.

Task 3 – P4, P5, P6, M3
Malfunctions
This task is concerned with identifying a malfunction in both the body systems chosen for investigation,
what risk factors these malfunctions may have and the care that should be given to patients/services users
demonstrating these malfunctions.
P4
Identify a malfunction that may occur in each of the two body systems described and give information on
the relevant risk factors that might lead to further problems with the relevant system.
You must identify one malfunction for each body system. You must cover both systems.
P5
Identify the risk factors for each of the two malfunctions.
P6
Describe the care that should be given to patients/service users with these two malfunctions.
M3
In order to achieve M3 you need to ensure that your evidence explains the link between the malfunction of
the 2 body systems and the care the patients/service users receive.
Assessment Criteria to be met:
P1
Identify the position and function of the main organs
of the human body.
P2
Describe the structure and functions of two of the
major body systems.
P3
Describe the routine measurements and
observations used to monitor these two body
systems.
P4
Identify a malfunction in each of the two major body
systems described.
P5
Identify risk factors for each of the two malfunctions
P6
Describe the care that should be given to
patients/service users with these two malfunctions.
To achieve a merit grade the evidence must show that the
learner is able to:
M1
Explain the structure of body systems in relation to
their functions
M2
Explain how routine measurements and
observations taken on these two body systems
could indicate malfunction.
M3
Explain the link between the malfunction of the two
body systems and the care the patients/service
users receive.
To achieve a distinction grade the evidence must show that the
learner is able to:
D1
Explain how two systems of the body interrelate to
perform a named function.
D2
Explain how routine measurements and
observations can be used as indicators of health/ill
health.
