Definitions and clarification for the lab ordering process
Priority
Used for
TAT
Stat
Acute clinical change in patient’s condition
Examples: active bleeding, chest pain, change in
mental status, or unexpected arrhythmia.
Drawn w/in 15 min of order &
received w/in 30 min of order
Most results w/in 1 hour of order
ASAP
Urgent situations involving coordination of care on
stable patients.
Examples: missed orders, “now” orders, scheduled
surgery patients with missing pre-op labs, or
“discharge pending” results (eg-“pt may be discharged
if hematocrit is stable”).
Drawn w/in 30 min of order
Timed
When treatment or dosage decisions require tests be
drawn at a specific time.
Examples: peak/trough drug levels, cardiac markers,
newborn screening & total bilirubin.
Drawn w/in 15 min before or
after time requested
Most results w/in 1 hour of draw
Routine
Any situation not listed above.
Most results w/in 4 hours of
order
Add On
Order a test to be run on blood already in the lab.
Order the test needed with the priority of Add On
and the laboratory will receive the notice to
process the request. Do not change any other
settings.
Results typically available
within 1 hour if the sample in
the lab is appropriate for the
test ordered. If not, lab will
initiate a draw.

Do not change any other settings.
Fasting samples drawn daily between 0300 and 0630
for orders entered in EPIC by 2400 midnight.

phlebotomy done by lab.
