The period was known for Catholic monarchs who wanted to re-establish Catholic unity and Europe and Protestant and Catholic monarchs who attempted to build strong, centralized states, like France. The 16c is known for witch-hunts. Modern forms of racism (with slavery), sexism (women seen as source of evil and losing power), and skepticism (further developed in 17c) emerged. Chapter 16 The two important types of government to come from the 17c and 18c absolute monarchy as in France and constitutional government as in England. Absolutist monarchy reached its pinnacle under Louis XIV. Spain is in decline as an empire. The American wealth declines while the Spanish social and economic structures had atrophied in the 16c. England and the Dutch develop forms of constitutional governments after having to fight off absolutist challenges. Chapter 17 Unlike Western Europe, Eastern European states generally developed absolutist governments that lasted for several centuries, especially Austria, Prussia, and Russia. Baroque art and architecture was used to enhance the rulers’ power, as Renaissance art had been used to enhance the power of 15 and 16c popes and Italian ruling families.
