CITY OF THOMSON, GEORGIA CLASS SPECIFICATION CLASS TITLE: DEPARTMENT: REPORTS TO: FIREFIGHTER/EMT/ENGINEER FIRE FIRE CHIEF DEPT. CODE: DATE: 10/2010 JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for protecting lives and property endangered by fire and other emergency situations and is responsible for emergency medical rescue. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Responds to fires and performs fire suppression activities utilizing firefighting equipment and techniques, including nozzle operation, fire stream direction, and building ventilation. Performs rescue, salvage, and overhaul operations. Administers first response emergency medical care. Assesses patient status by visual observation, physical examination and the taking of vital signs. Determines necessary care, materials, equipment, medication and fluids necessary to stabilize patient, and to administer determined care. Maintains inventory of supplies, materials, medications, fluids and treatment used to insure accurate reporting and supply replacement upon completion of assignment. Practices using and instructs others in using all rescue EMS equipment, supplies and materials. Participates in physical fitness programs. Inspects assigned apparatus and equipment; performs routine maintenance on same. Participates and assists in training, fire drills, and mock disasters, including set-up and evacuation. Participates in formal classroom and informal field training sessions, workshops, drills and exercises to learn and practice new extrication, rescue, resuscitation and patient stabilization techniques. May act as substitute driver of emergency vehicles to include establishing a fire stream and monitoring gauges. Performs building maintenance housekeeping and grounds maintenance duties. Conducts station tours. Assists in completing reports. Performs other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of patient assessment including topographic anatomy, diagnostic signs, vital signs and patient surveys to include subjective and objective findings. Thorough knowledge of airway care, pulmonary arrest and cardiac arrest resuscitation procedures to include CPR, airway control and ventilation Knowledge of firefighting techniques. Knowledge of firefighting apparatus and equipment. Knowledge of hydraulics and extrication equipment. Knowledge of local, state and federal fire codes. Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association guidelines and departmental and city rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Knowledge of local geography, streets and buildings. Knowledge of hazardous materials. Knowledge of potential fire hazards. Knowledge of first responder emergency medical care. Knowledge of building construction and basic mechanics. Skill in operating firefighting equipment. Skill in operating rescue and extrication equipment. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication. SUPERVISORY CONTROL: The Fire Chief assigns work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed for compliance with instructions and established procedures and the nature and propriety of final results. SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to protect lives and property through fire suppression activities, fire prevention and safety activities, and emergency medical attention. Successful performance results in increased public safety and decreased property loss. The work consists of related fire suppression and emergency medical rescue duties. Potentially life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the work. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching and stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and be able to distinguish between shades of color. The work is typically performed in an office or at fire scenes. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, smoke, fumes, and hazardous situations and materials that require the use of protective equipment. The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress requiring a range of safety and other precautions. SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: High School Diploma or equivalent from an accredited organization. Valid Georgia Drivers License. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Must obtain a Class B driver’s license. Basic Firefighter Certification with the State of Georgia Firefighter Minimum Standards and Training Certifications must be obtained within 12 months of hire. American Heart Association Basic Life Support, Health Care Provider. Georgia Certified Emergency Medical Technician must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
